At Czestochowa
One Hundred Thousand Attend
Millennium Celebrations
BERLIN — (NC) — More than
100,000 persons went by train, car,
truck, wagon, and on foot to the
famed shrine of the Black Ma
donna at Czestochowa for celebra
tions May 3 marking the 1,000th
anniversary of Christianity in Po
land.
At dawn, thousands were lined
up to receive Communion from
white-robed priests of the Pauline
Order.
During the ceremonies Stefan
Cardinal Wyszynski carried the
painting of the Black Madonna
around the ramparts of the Czes
tochowa monastery of Jasna Gora.
He and the Polish archbishops
carried the Madonna to the first
station, where it was then handed
over to a group of bishops from
the former German territory now
ruled by Poland.
The cardinal participated in the
ceremonies as both the Primate
of Poland and as the legate of
Pope Paul VI.
Father Melchior Krulik expres
sed sorrow to the vast throng that
Pope Paul VI could be present,
but declared, “We are united with
him in spirit.” At these words a
cheer arose from the crowd.
The Pope and other foreign
Church officials were barred by
the Polish communist regime from
attending the special ceremonies.
Despite this ban, a group of 52
Chicago Catholics led by Father
Bernard J. Niemier, C.S.C., of Chi
cago’s Holy Trinity church attend
ed the celebration. They were
among the few Polish-Americans
able to get visas. Thousands of
other Americans had hoped to
come to Poland for the event.
The crowd at the celebration in
Czestochowa was huge despite po
lice harassment and the fact that
it was a working day. Workers in
the nearby industrial complex at
Katowice were forced to attend a
government rally. The rally, at
which Polish communist party
chief Wladyslaw Gomulka was to
speak was scheduled to observe
the 45th anniversary of a Polish
uprising against the awarding of
industrial Silesia to Germany af
ter World War I.
Gomulka has accused Church
leaders of using the millennium
to sow discord between Poland
and the Soviet Union, and the ral
ly was considered an attempt to
detract from the Catholic celebra
tion at Czestochowa.
