St. Gregory Ehling of New Bern, a mathematics teacher at William Gaston Catholic High School, is attending a Summer Institute in Mathematics for Sec ondary School Teachers at The Catholic University of America from June 30 to August 11. Sponsored by the National Sci ence Foundation, the Institute is intended to provide training in modern aspects of mathematics to strengthen high school mathemat ics teaching. Participants were chosen on the basis of prior math ematics training and teaching ex perience, and commitment to the teaching profession. Topics included high algebra, basic analysis, projective geome try, probability and statistics, set theory and proof-making methods in algebra and geometry. Credit for the institute courses is applicable toward graduate de gree work. NSF support provided for free tuition, living stipends, dependent allowances and round-trip travel expenses. Sister Mary Cecilia, chairman of the Music Department at Sacred Heart has recently been made a consultant member of the music committee of the Diocesan Liturgi cal Commission on the basis of her knowledge and experience in the field of Liturgical Music. She also served as chairman of the Robert Dunn Jr. Workshop con ducted under the auspices of the Charlotte Piano Teacher’s Forum which was held in J. B. Ivey’s au ditorium, Charlotte, in early June. ALL MEMBERS of the Sacred Heart Music faculty who are in the area participated in this event since Sister Mary Cecilia encour ages the faculty of the Music De partment to be well informed and up-to-date in all musical affairs.
