Urge Liberal Liquor Law
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — (RNS) —
The Episcopal Diocese of Western
North Carolina has called on the
state legislature to legalize con
sumption of liquor outside the
home.
The State Supreme Court re
cently ruled that under existing
laws liquor can be consumed le
gally only in one’s home.
At its annual convention here,
the Episcopal diocese adopted a
resolution which stated that “in
the interest of responsible citi
zenship seeking laws that are rea
sonable and enforceable, be it re
solved that this convention peti
tion the Legislature of the State
of North Carolina to legalize con
sumption of liquor outside the
home and transportation of liquor
for the purpose of consumption,
and that adequate means be pro
vided for proper enforcement.”
The resolution, introduced by the
Rev. P. F. DeSaix of Asheville,
was recommended to the conven
tion by a committee on Christian
social relations.

Klan Appears at Unity Services
ftev. J. L. Creel of Our Lady
of Fatima Parish in Winston
Salem gave the Sermon at the
Christian Unity Service held at
the., Madison-Mayodan High
School on Jan. 22. The service
was sponsored by the Western
Rockingham County Ministerial
Association. Various members of
the Association read the Lessons
and gave the invocations at the
service, which was part of the
Church Unity Octave Celebra
tions.
About twenty members of the
Klu Klux Klan appeared outside
the auditorium; seven of them
wore the Klan regalia but were
not masked. They had a tape re
corder with them but otherwise
caused no trouble. They were
greeted by some of the ministers
and responded politely. The
Unity Service was integrated
which perhaps prompted their
presence. They identified them
selves as the United Klan of
America.
