Laymen To Make Financial Appeals
For the next three months the
priests at Holy Child parish in
Jacksonville will make no men
tion of the financial needs or
status of the parish. Instead
these announcements and ap
peals will be handled by the lay
men of the parish. This is part
of the diocesan effort to have
the laymen share directly in the
operation and direction of par
ish affairs.
Monsignor Lawrence Newman,
the pastor, made this announce
ment when he presented the an
nual financial report to the pa
rishioners. The highlight of the
report was that the per diem
cost of parish operation had
dropped from $476 per day in
1965 to $422 per day in 1966.
Ten years ago when the then
Father Newman was assigned to
the parish the debt was $163,000;
since then a rectory, school,
gymnatorium and Church have
been erected. The total debt is
now $235,093.00 and should be
paid by 1978.
