Two Are Ordained To the Priesthood On Ascension Day RALEIGH — “As Christ was different in His appearance and natural qualities from the time of His Resurrection to His As cension, we too are expected to be different in our attitudes to ward our Christian responsi bilities,” the Very Rev. Charles J. O’Connor said in the sermon during an Ascension Day Mass marking the annual Ordination rites here. “We are expected to be for giving, zealous for unity and peace, anxious to bring people to a greater appreciation of the mission of Christ, as clergy and laity alike share in the respon sibilities of the People of God,” Father O’Connor said. The new parish church of St. Raphael’s in the Millbrook su Editor's Desk It was the week-end of the turning ahead of the clocks for the switch to Daylight Saving .Time. The ominous shadows of rank confusion first cast their shadows over the pastor’s break fast coffee when the daily har binger of “putting the day’s show on the road” . . . the jani tor asked, “Father, Sister wants to know if the school bus is going out Monday op old time or new time?” Now the _ truth was dawning on the originality of these daily visits of fore boding breakdowns on the par ish compound or the need of purchases made for the prover bial bailing wire to hold all things together. Or it was the phone call of a lady parishioner made at exact ly 1:15 in the afternoon . . . “Father, when is the last Mass?” r... to which the reply was made, “the last Mass has been over for the past 25 minutes.” “But Fa ther, it is only 11:15 a.m., isn’t there a noon Mass?” “Lady, I believe that you turned your clock back an hour last night instead of ahead.” “Oh, Father, .that’s just what I have done, rwhat will I dp, my mother has never missed Mass on Sunday in her whole life, what will I ever tell her?” “I guess you will just See Editor’s Desk, page 5A Rev. Dash is appointed Assistant Pastor of St. Gabriel’s Parish also an Apostolate Center of the Diocese in Greenville, N.C. effective Monday, May 22, 1967. Louis E. Morton Chancellor Diocesan Population Up 2,768 Over Year RALEIGH — The general Summary of Statistics released by the Official Catholic Di rectory for 1967 related to the Diocese of Raleigh shows an in crease of 2,768 in Catholic pop ulation over the figure of 53,242 given for last year. However the figure given for infant Baptisms of native births within the diocese would set a figure of only 752 immigrating to the diocese from other parts of the country. There has been an increase of 873 pupils under Catholic in struction, parochial and Con fraternity classes over the total 20,632 of last year. The 2,516 Baptisms decreased 187 over the previous year’s total, infants 142 less and of adults by 46. Dependent chil dren of the diocese number 55. The Catholic hospitals treated 62,791 patients. In the field of education there are presently 1,035 stu dents in Diocesan high schools, S a Population, page 8A House Approves Abortion Bill RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina House has passed by a voice vote a bill to revise the state’s abortion laws. The bill, previously passed by the Senate, was returned to the Senate for approval of minor amendments. The bill would permit abor tions to protect the mental and physical health of a woman; to prevent the birth of a deformed or defective child, or where pregnancy resulted from rape or incest. Present law forbids abor tions except to save a mother’s life._ burb of this city was filled with relatives and friends of the new ly ordained priests, 125 altar boy visitors from parishes in the eastern and Piedmont sections of the State, Sisters of various convents and 38 of the clergy. Two Ordained The Holy Day Rites were the occasion of the ordination to the priesthood of the Rev. Alan J. Dash and the Rev. James E. Wa ters. The Most Rev. Vincent S. Waters, Bishop of the Diocese, was the ordaining prelate and the Most Rev. Charles B. Mc Laughlin, Auxiliary Bishop, as sisted in the Sanctuary. Also present in the sanctuary with chaplains were the Right Rev. E. McSweeney of Durham and the Right Rev. George E. Lynch of Sanford. The Very Rev. Louis E. Mor ton, Chancellor, was notary and presented the two deacons to be advanced to the office of priest hood. Assisting the ordaining prelate as deacons were the Rev. John Richardson, host pastor, and the Rev. Frederick A. Koch of Cary. The spacious sanctuary area of the new church, with the ap pointments and furnishings ac cording to the recommendations of the recent directives of the Decree on the Sacred Liturgy, enabled the officiating clergy to conduct the Sacred Rites with ease and edification. The Rev. Albert Todd of Swansboro and the Rev. Gerald E. Lewis of North Wilkesboro were Masters of Ceremony. Choir Augmented The choir of the parish was augmented by some visiting Sis ters and a deacon friend of Fa ther Dash, coming from Alexan dria, La., for the occasion. The English rendition of the Litany of the Saints and the Hymn to The Holy Spirit were excellently rendered. The newly ordained Father Waters has been appointed as sistant pastor of St John’s Par ish in North Wilkesboro and Fa ther Dash has been appointed as sistant pastor of St. Gabriel’s Parish in Greenville. A reception honoring Fathers Dash and Waters was held the evening before the Ordination at St. Raphael’s Rectory. After the Ordination Mass, a breakfast was served to the honored guests and their families. Awaiting the procession of clergy to form before the Ordination Mass for the conferring of Holy Orders upon the new priests of the Diocese are the above principals, L. to R., the Most Rev. Charles B.
