Promotors of community, parish social at Jacksonville Church

the parochial clergy and laity. For a year and a half Divine Services were held in a social hall and the
reconstruction represented an investment of over a quarter of a million dollars. The community as well
as the parish celebrated tbe event with a city-wide reception. Participants who promotedLthe social event
are pictured above. Back row, Francis Gibbons, church art glass manufacturer of Baltimore, the Rev.

Bad American Image
BELLEVILLE, 111. — (NC) —
“We find disturbing incidents in
the American Church today of
clergymen challenging the au
thority of their bishops and
other superiors, of some laymen
heaping insult on members of
the hierarchy and even of biting
criticism of the supreme pon
tiff,” the national head of the
Knights of Columbus said here ,
(April 30). <
The Supreme Knight of the i
Catholic men’s organization,
John McDevitt, spoke at a ban- 1
quet of the southern Illinois dis
trict at which he was the guest j
of honor.
McDevitt warned of a current
trend to oppose anything and
everything authoritative, and
said that many demonstrators
display “shocking immaturity.”
He singled out anti-war demon
strators as an example, and said
that such people are aided by
communications media in “pre
senting a distorted image of
America.”

THE 1967 NORTH CAROLINA STATE COUNCIL MEET
ING IN FAYETTEVILLE comes to an end at noon today. The
delegates and their ladies, and those Brother Knights who at
tended a State convention for the first time “just to see what
one’s like,” will be or already have hit the road for home by
now as you read these lines. _
We are safe in saying even now (smce this story is writ
ten a week ahead) that great good was accomplished at the
1967 meeting. All of these meetings achieve some good for
the Order, regardless of what year they are held. All programs
that were planned or hoped for did not come to pass, and all
of the resolutions did not get approval, but no State Conven
tion is every a failure! ......
The State Convention will be covered more in detail in
later issues of the North Carolina Catholic.
