Letter by Pope
Puts Emphasis
On Mary's Role
VATICAN CITY — (NC) —
Pope Paul VI appealed to all
Catholics to renew their conse
cration to the Immaculate Heart
of Mary on the eve of his flight
to Fatima, Portugal, to pray for
peace.
In a letter addressed to the
Catholic bishops of the world
entitled Signum Magnum (A
Great Sign), the Pope laid great
stress on the role of Mary in the
work of salvation that has been
entrusted to the Church. The let
ter, almost 3,000 words long, was
highly pastoral in tone and was
dated May 13, the same day the
Pope made his visit to the Fa
tima shrine. The letter was re
leased to the press May 12.
The Pope said that on the
same day ceremonies were being
held in Fatima “we wish once
more to call the attention of all
sons of the Church to the in
dissoluable link between the
spiritual motherhood of Mary
, . . and the duties of redeemed
men toward her, the Mother of
the Church.”
The Pope wrote that “Mary is
the Mother of the Church not
only because she is the Mother
»f Christ and His closest associ
ate in the new ‘economy’ in
which the Son of God took a
human nature from her so that
tie might, in the mysteries of
His flesh, free man from sin,
but also because she shines forth
to the whole community of the
elect as a model of the virtues.”

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — (NC)
—President Lyndon B. Johnson
has commended a resolution

honorable peace in Vietnam.”
In a letter to John W. McDev

President Johnson called the
resolution a “constructive re

al challenge.”
The resolution was adopted at
a meeting of the K. of C. board
of directors in Minneapolis, April
21. It also voiced “admiration
for and encouragement of the
heroic American fighting men
who are braving deprivation, in
jury and death to defend the
long-term interests of the Unit

rewarded.”
President Johnson’s response

“I was happy and proud to
receive your resolution support

“This constructive response by
the Knights of Columbus to a

an example for every individual

believe that it is representative
of the real feelings of the ma
