Staff Nun Asks Family Aid
In Mother's Maternity Period
Waynesville, N.C. — Sister Mary Stella, Supervisor of
Obstetrics, St. Mary’s Hospital, Evansville, Indiana, was the
principal speaker at the two-day Haywood County Maternity
Health Workshop, held last week at the Robertson Memorial
YMCA at Canton. Family centered maternity care was the
theme 01 tne worKsnop.
Sister Mary Stella, for the past
ten years, has been developing the
concept of the family centered
hospital maternity care. The ob
jective through pre-natal instruc
tion is to prepare the family for
the birth, so that members can at
tend the mother during childbirth.
The workshop also had as guest
speaker, Dr. Keith N. Brandeber
ry, Chief of Obstetrics at Holzer
Hospital, Gallipolis, Ohio, who
also discussed the concept of fam
ily centered maternity care.
Miss Sue Morgan, Director of
the Haywood County In-service
Education, at the local Hospital
said that North Carolina has no
such program of family centered
maternity care. She added that
hospitals unfamiliar with the con
cept are reluctant to break from
traditional methods of maternity.
Some 90 nurses from 15 North
Carolina towns in the Western
area of the State attended.

Knights of Columbus
Roundup
The following letter from Brother KENNETH E. STROUD, our
State Catholic Activity Chairman, is of interest to all Knights:
“Our State Chaplain, Fr. RAYMOND DONOHUE, in his address
to the 1967 State Convention, urged all Knights to work during the
coming year towards the implementation of the decrees of Vatican II.
“For this reason, your State Council has undertaken to organize its
first State Seminar to be of>en to all Knights, their ladies, and indeed
to all interested laymen. To serve the Church properly, we must first
be an informed laity, and this seminar will provide all of us with the
opportunity for instruction and discussion.
“By kind permission of Fr. MICHAEL CAREY (Past State Chap
lain), the seminar will take place at Our Lady of Lourdes Church,
Raleigh, on APRIL 27, 1968 from 1 to 5 p.m. We have the services of „
five trained discussion leaders, three Priests and two laymen; their
names will be announced at a later date. Discussion subjects will be:
(1) Is Communism a Menace?; (2) The Church and War; (3) Is There
a Crisis in Catholic Education?; (4) What Is the Priesthood of the
Laity?; and (5) Do We Need the Clergy and Religious? Topic 5 is
deeply concerned with vocations. We will have a closing session at
5 p.m.
“What can you do to prepare for this seminar? Arouse intereat
amongst Council members by having your Lecturer use the planned
topics as the basis for monthly discussion under ‘Good of The Order.’
This will whet your members appetites to participate in our State
wide exchange of views on these subjects.
“The success of this venture will depend to a great extent on your
cooperation and your support. We urge you to publicize the seminar in
your own area, promote attendance at it, and urge your own Council
members, in particular, to attend the seminar. The initiative you show
in planning these local discussions, plus your efforts to publicize the
seminar, as well as your Council’s participation, will be stressed at
the end of the activity year in the Six-Point program.”
This proposed Seminar can be one of the most outstanding proj
ects the State Council has ever undertaken. It is hoped that all Knights,
laymen, and other interested persons will avail themselves of this
worthy endeavor.
