Justin Pechulis, pastor of St. Catherine’s church here, returned from Newark, New Jersey last week where he officiated at the Requiem Mass of burial for his late father, Cyprian Z. Pechulis. . . . Mr. Pechulis, a widower, had been in declining health for some time. He is survived by a married daughter, Mary and by Father Pechulis. To Honor Jesuit Missioner Rocky Mount — April 19-21 is the date for the annual conven tion of the Catholic Daughters of America to be held at the Sir Walter Hotel at Raleigh. The National Convention will take place in Cleveland, Ohio, July 14-18 at the Sheraton-Cleveland Hotel. These dates were announced by Grand Regent Evelyn Farris during a meeting of Court Christ the King, CD A, here last week. Bishop Charles B. McLaughlin, a former pastor here, will address the State Convention at the Banquet on Saturday evening. Members of the Court are presently promoting a membership drive and plans for a reception of new members is scheduled prior to the March meeting. t _ , . Miss Dorothy Barnett told of the recent week-end retreat for women at Maryhurst Retreat House at Pinehurst. She was accom panied by Mrs. Leo Moreta and expressed appreciation to Msgr. James E. McSweeney for his direction as retreat master. The Court set up a Committee, chaired by Florence Hayden, to contact the Nashmont Nursing Home and work out a schedule with their Activity Director whereby members may make themselves available for service. Reverend Francis Smith, chaplain, announced a con-celebrated Mass on March 10, honoring a native of Rocky Mount, Reverend William Lynn, S.J. . . Father Lynn, serving the Mission in Burma, was expelled by that government and re-asssigned to Korea. An afternoon reception is being plannned by the Social Commit tee. All of the priest’s friends and acquaintances are invited: Parish Mission at Chapel Hill Chapel Hill — “A program of parish renewal” will begin at St. Thomas More church here on February 25 and continue to March 1st. The services will be conducted by the Reverend Eugene Leso, a Passionist Father of North Palm Beach, Florida. The Sunday service will begin at 7:30 p.m. and daily mission hours are at 12:30, 6 and 8 p.m. Mass will precede each of the services, except the last, when Mass will follow. A nursery care will be provided at noon. Ash Wednesday will be observed on the 28th marking the beginning of Lent. The services were announced by the Reverend Francis J. Murphy, pastor. , . . . A native of Mahanoy City, Pa., Father Leso was ordained in 1956. He was selected for a year of Slavic studies in Cleveland and did parochial mission work in Canada until 1959, when he volun teered for the newly opened mission field of Southern Mindanao, Philippine Islands. He returned recently to the Passionist Mission Band with headquarters in Florida. Press Extolled; No Retreat from World Bridgeport, Conn. — A bish op counseled here that persons who cut themselves off from Catholic publications because they are disturbed by some of the things they read are making “a great mistake.” Bishop Walter W. Curtis of Bridgeport said it would be “a tragedy” not to keep in touch with the Catholic press on a reg ular basis, because “there is no other means of communication bringing us the full picture of Christian thinking and reac tion” Bishop Curtis in a letter mark ing Catholic Press Month which is observed in Febmary, urged Catholics to subscribe to their diocesan newspaper “as part of the over all adult education pro gram in religion in our dio cese.” “Likely,” he said, “you will not agree with every position taken by this Catholic paper. Neither do I. Yet it is a chal lenging paper. It will strengthen our faith if we read it with good judgment and regularly.” He cautioned Catholics against expecting to find in Catholic newspapers and magazines “a set of ready-made solutions merely to be accepted by us.
