The current issue- of Child and Family states that “it has now been established that The Pill causes 3 deaths per 100,000 women from thromboembolism” or a total of 180 deaths among the six million women using it in the United States. The maga zine calls The Pill “the most dangerous drug ever introduced for use by the healthy in respect to lethality and major compli cations. Dr. Hervert Ratner, Oak Park public health director and new editor of the magazine, told Na tional Catholic News Service that the criticism of “The Pill” was aimed at all birth control pills currently being marketed by some 15 different companies in the United States. Points Fallacy Claiming that The Pill enjoys “diplomatic immunity from crit icism,” the editorial attempts to document that it: —has not solved the popula tion crisis. —has not received significant acceptance by the developing countries and among the poor. —has “seduced” the real users of The Pill, the middle and up per classes of the United States, away from safe and well estab lished means of birth control. (It quotes a physician who chaired an FDA Advisory Com mittee on Oral Contraceptives as saying, “If I were a young People in Area of 6 Churches Invited To Neighborhood Tours Charlotte — Parishioners of St Ann’s parish here are participat ing in a “Church Neighbors Tour" planned for March 3 be tween six congregations located in the Park Road area. The program will include tours of the various churches, explana tion of the symbols of the reli gious denominations, opportuni ty for questions and a genuine welcome. Participating with St. Ann’s par ish are nearby Presbyterian, Methodist, Episcopal, Baptist and Lutheran churches. At St Ann’s visitors will be guided through the church, con vent and school. It adds: “If for reasons of its own the Food and Drug Administration feels it cannot remove The Pill from the market on the same basis as other drugs, we would urge the FDA to appoint another committee to study the question of The Pill’s safety. “If the safety of the public is paramount, such a committee should be sympathetic to a long established principle of medi cine, namely, to lean toward the worst diagnosis,” the editorial said.
