Religion-Science Discussed
Raleigh _ “The Christian Dimensions of Science,” the fourth
in a series of programs sponsored during the Lenten season by the
John XXIII Christian Renewal, will take place tomorrow, March 25,
at the Catholic High School here at 8:00 p.m. Dr. Chester M. Zmi
jewski of Duke University will discuss scientific study and its innu
merable products which has dominated the life and culture of
modern man. Long held in mutual suspicion the seeming differences
between science and religion is hopefully a thing of the past. The
speaker is an associate professor at the university medical center.
Project Handclasp Aided
Concord — A children’s home in South Vietnam will soon receive
about a 1,000 pounds of clothing, toys and film strips for the young
sters as a coooerative effort of the CYO of St. James church here,
and the U.S. Navy’s “Project Handclasp.” Begun nineteen years ago,
the project is one initiated by Navy men who had witnessed the
need in many lands and enlisted the aid of civilians to do something
about it. Father Richard Allen, pastor, received a letter from one
of the Sisters of St. Paul of Charities. There are over 600 children
in the school. Overnight Trucking Company picked up the six barrels
of needy items for free transportation to the point of shipment.
Abbey Student Cited
Belmont — Richard Joseph Salem of Annunciation parish, Have
lock, has been elected president of the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity
at Belmont Abbey College here. A member of the Junior Class he
is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Salem of Havelock. The fraternity
encourages scholastic standing and fraternal interests in community
affairs.
Win Valued Scholarships
Durham — Two young people of Holy Cross parish received
four year scholarships to college in the 4th annual National Achieve
ment Scholarship Program for outstanding Negro students. Miss
Allyson Kay Duncan, daughter of Mr, and Mrs. Robert G. Duncan
and Dwight R. Greene, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lafayette Greene were
chosen as winners in the competition. Miss Duncan plans evidentally
to study law. Greene plans to major in Political Science at Wake
Forest University and also to enter the field of Law.
Quintet Concert at Belmont
Belmont — The Illinois Wesleyan University Woodwind Quintet
will present a program at Sacred Heart College here on March 31st
at 8:30 P.M. The group is composed of five outstanding instrumental
students from the Department of Music. The program will include
Beethoven’s ‘‘Quintet Op. 16”; “Quintet” by Paul Taffanel; and “The
Chimney of King Rene” by Darius Milhaud.
Confirmation next Sunday, Cary
Cary — Sixty-six adults and children of St. Michael’s church
here will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday, March

ence J. Cooke, who has been
named archbishop here has
pledged “my life, my love, my
service” to the people of the
archdiocese.
Commenting on prospects for
racial peace in New York this
summer, he said there is a great
need to implement the recom
mendations of the National Com
mission on Civil Disorders and
pledged the efforts of the arch
diocese toward this end.
He will be installed on April 4.
TALKS IN MOSCOW
London — (NC) — Auxiliary
Bishop Christopher Butler, O.S.B.,
of Westminster will address a
World Council of Churches con
ference at Zagorsk near Moscow
on March 23. The conference
(March 17-23) will discuss the
theological basis of social action.
Scouting Honors
Youths, Counselors Cited
March 24 in Greensboro
McLaughlin will officiate. A light buffet will be served immediately
following the Mass by the social committee of the parish.
Historical Society Named
Raleigh — The formation of the Catholic Historical Society of
North Carolina was given recognition this month in “Carolina Com
ments,” a publication of the State Department of Archives and
History. The society is a member of the state organization for the
preservation of antiquities.
Studies PAVLA
Raleigh — The Very Rev. Charles J. O’Connor recently re
turned from New Orleans where he discussed the work of the Papal
Volunteers for Latin America with lay participation in U.S. opera
tions. The program received initial encouragement from the Catholic
Church Extension Society of America. The meeting proposed the
formation of a lay committee to encourage volunteers for Catholic
action.
Greensboro — A Catholic
Awards Ceremony for Boy and
Cub Scouts will take place next
Sunday, March. 24, at 3:30 p.m. at
Our Lady of Grace Church here.
Awards will include the Ad
Altare Dei for Boy Scouts and
the Parvuli Dei for Cub Scouts.
Robert Parish will receive the
highest adult religious award of
the Catholic Church for scouting
participation.
Bishop Charles B. McLaugh
lin, pastor of the host parish,
will preside. He will welcome
Scouts, officials and chaplains
who are affiliated with the
Western District Scout Program
of the Diocese of Raleigh.
Other awards will be made to
adults engaged in the scouting
program sponsored by various
parishes. A social program will
follow the ceremony in the par
ish school auditorium.
Mr. Parish will be presented
the St. George emblem. He has
been the recipient of many Boy
Scout awards and has devoted
years in developing the scouting
program for this city and state.
Patrick R. McDaid, Institutional
Representative of the Western
District, Troop III, is in charge
of the program.
‘CHURCH WORLD’ INCREASE
Portland, Me. — (NC) — A
subscription price increase from
10 cents to 15 cents per copy and
from $4 to $5 per year has been
announced by the Church World,
official publication of the Port
land diocese. The increase is
scheduled to take effect April 1.
