Levin K. Jones, P.M., Sec’y Many Secretaries do not under stand that a Report of Doings on Form 49 must be sent to the Grand Secretary’s office within five days after each stated communication, whether or not you have anything to report under the sixteen items listed on this report form. See Re gulation 67-16 (18) of THE Code. If you have nothing to report, you should write the word “NONE” at the top near the name and number of your lodge. Election time will soon be coming up, which will be followed by the installation of the new Officers of the lodges, and this sometimes calls for a search of the minutes to de termine if a certain member is eli gible to be installed by having passed an examination on the cate chism of the Third Degree. While I was the Secretary of my lodge I kept a list in the back of the lodge ledger of all members eligible to ! hold office under the provisions I of Regulation 80-08. This saves a ; lot of searching through the min- I utes to find this information. The Grand Master has stated that he hopes to hold 10 area meet ings over the state early in 1969 in an effort to be helpful to the new lodge Officers. It has been suggest ed that these meetings might af ford the opportunity of holding a series of forums for lodge Secre taries, and we would like to hear from the lodge Secretaries and get their reaction to this suggestion. I suggest that these meetings, if held, should be on Saturdays, and that they should start at about 2:00 P.M. and last until about 4:30, following which we could have about a half hour for visiting, then a dinner at about five to five fif teen, compliments of the Grand Lodge. If it is decided to hold these for ums for our Secretaries, we will decide on the locations and then ask the several Secretaries in that area to help us in the arranging of these meetings and the dinners. There appears to be some mis understanding by some lodge Sec retaries regarding the proper way to withdraw from a lodge by mem bers holding dual membership. The only way to withdraw from a lodge is to request a demit in writing, or by oral request made in open lodge. A Certificate of Good Standing is not a withdrawal except in trans ferring from one North Carolina lodge to another in this State. In cases where a member became a dual member during the organi zation of a new lodge, and has now decided that he does not wish to pay dues in two North Carolina lodges, he must make a proper re quest as provided in Regulation 84-04 (1) of THE CODE, and he must pay all indebtedness to both lodges before he can withdraw from either lodge. Curious items From Ancient Wisdom In Hebrew history there are re corded the acts of great men. Da vid wrote the Psalms and they are sung to the glory of God and in grateful memory of David to this very day. Solomon coined his Pro verbs and his minted wisdom has become a part of the heritage of all races. He built a great Temple and is honored and revered among Ma sons. Both have won their immor tality by doing the great, the ar tistic and beautiful. But there was another of the im mortals of ancient Isreal who also established his claim to eternal gratitude. Jacob dug a well. The stones that line its walls were first put in place almost 3,500 years ago. Yet they are still straight and true and the well has never gone dry. Throughout 35 centuries, men have come that way and refreshed their souls, watered their flocks and herds. The well has never failed any man. In India they have a proverb which says: “He has not lived in vain who has reared a son, planted a tree, or dug a well.” Most of us every day drink from wells we have not dug. Blessed is the man who digs a well from which another soul may draw hope and faith. —William Ogden Bissonett, 33° can it affiliate new members after receiving its dispensation. It must wait until the lodge has been char tered by the Grand Lodge before issuing demits or affiliating new members. At the last meeting of the Board of General Purposes, the Grand Master received a request from the Board that he appoint a special committee to contact families of de ceased Masons who were known to possess valuable Masonic libraries, in the hope that these families could be persuaded to present these libraries to the Grand Lodge. If you know of any such libraries it will be appreciated if you will so advise the Grand Secretary’s office. PLEASE, Brother Secretary, as soon as your lodge elects a new Master and a Secretary, send us the card promptly giving their names, addresses, telephone numbers, ete. This is most important, and we will appreciate your prompt attention. Charles A. Harris
