HOOKS Grand Master of Masons in North Carolina The Grand Master’s Masonic Activi ties were held to a minimum during the first three weeks in May in an effort to get his personal affairs in order. While this objective was not completely ac complished, progress was made. During this period I attended both meetings of my own lodge and at tempted to convey to the brethren my sincere appreciation for all they have done for me. At the second meeting, I was privileged to present a 50-Year Veteran’s Emblem to Brother Robert Hill, and more than a dozen 25-Year Service Awards to other members of Fellowship Lodge No. 84. This was a delightful occasion for me. I had grown up in the lodge with most of these brethren, and back in 1939 and 1940 we had spent a lot of time together learn ing the catechisms. Later, many of us served as officers together, learning the ritualistic work and trying to find out what Masonry is all about. We are (Continued on Page Two) No Vacation For Enthusiasm! By R. Gage Smith, P.M. The Chairman of the Draft Board, Brother Harry Shor, Importante of the Oxford Orphanage Committee of Wil liam G. Hill Lodge No. 218, Raleigh, held another Steer-roping, beef brand ing and steak eating contest at the North Hills Steak House on Thursday evening, June 26. Rustlers “drafted” for the ‘?teak-out were Brothers F. V. Pate, P.M.; Gerald T. Shor, P.M.; Lester C. O’Neal; Harrison Kauffman, P.M.; and J. Archie Raines. The invocation was by Brother Har rison Kauffman; after which the thick roasted steaks were given a thorough going over by the determinate brethren. Brother Shor announced that the next round-up would be held in the Masonic Temple, Raleigh, on Wednesday, July 30, and Brother Robert Morgan, attor- (Continued on Page Three) The Drama of Sts. John’s Day at Raleigh Temple York Rite Masons Fayetteville Fayetteville’s fir.st one-day York Rite Festival was held on Saturday, May 17, at the Masonic Temple. Regis tration began at seven-thirty a.m. and the chapter was opened at eight. Before the chapter was closed at one o’clock, four degrees had been conferred: The Mark Master Degree, The Past Master Degree, The Most Excellent Master De gree, and The Royal Arch Degree. Lunch was served in the Temple Din ing Room, barbecue and chicken plates being available. The council was opened at one-forty- five, after which the Royal Master De gree and The Select Master Degree were conferred. The council was closed at three-thirty and the commandery was opened in order to confer before the din ner hour The Order Of The Red Cross and The Order of Malta. Speaker, St. John’s Day Raleigh On the afternoon of Saturday June 21 three Masonic Districts consisting of fourteen lodges met at the Masonic- Temple in Raleigh to observe Sts. John’s Day, and to team for work in the third degree. The host lodge William G. Hill No. 218, opened an Emergent Communica tion on the Master Mason’s degree. After brief preliminaries and welcom ing of the various lodges, the team for the first section of the Master Mason’s degree filled the various stations and places as follows: East, Bro. W. J. (“Bud”) Debnam, Millbrook No. 97; West, Bro. Danny Blalock, W. T. Bain No. 231; South, Bro. Hubert Vickers (Continued on Page Five)
