Free & Accepted Masons of b orth Carolina i Grand Master's Corner There was a let-up in District Meet ings in August because of a couple of meetings out of state. My activities for the month started on the first with a trip home from Charlotte, following a series of District Meetings in that area. On Satur day, August 2, I presided over a meeting of the Board of Direct ors of Oxford Or phanage, follow ed by the usual delicious meal in the Orphanage dining room. That afternoon an in teresting meeting of the Special Committee on Area Ed ucation was held in the Grand Lodge office in Raleigh. This committee, headed, by Brother Maurice E. Walsh as chairman, has been v/orking hard to develop a pro gram of Masonic education for the Blue Lodge Masons in North Carolina. This committee feels, and I whole-heartedly agree, that this program should not be launched until we are confident we have what we want, a strong program which will do the job we are hoping to ac- (Continued on Page Six) WiLUAM A. Hooks Brother Fred F. Harding Has Cataract Operation Brother Fred F. Harding, our 92- year old Grand Tyler (who has held this office since 1938) entered Rex Hospital in Raleigh on September 25 for a cat aract operation. The operation was per formed on September 26 and Mrs. Harding says he is getting along nicely. Brother Fred would like to express his appreciation to his Masonic Friends and their wives for the many flowers and cards he received while in the hos pital. M.'.W.'.J. Rowan County York Rite Holds Recognition Night By R. Guy East York Rite Masons of Salisbury and Rowan County, and their wives, attend ed ‘Recognition Night’ held at the Ma sonic Temple, Monday Night, September 29, for the purpose of recognizing mem bers of long standing and past presiding officers of the various bodies. J. W. Puckett, Master of Adoniram Council No. 2, acted as master of ceremonies. J. Giles Hudson, Sr., Thos. 0. Kepley and T. W. Summersett, Jr. received plaques in recognition of outstanding service to Salisbury and Rowan County Masons. Both Brother Hudson and Kep ley are past Grand Officers of North Carolina bodies, and Brother Summer- sett is a 25 year member who served many years as secretary and recorder. The past presiding officers received emblematic tie clasps as tokens of ap preciation of time and effort in behalf of York Rite Masonry. Nine members have served as presiding officers in all (Continued on Page Two) Brother Nelson Banks Elected To High Office Brother Nelson B. Banks, Recorder of Sudan Temple was recently elected Third Vice-President of the Shrine Recorder’s Association of North Ameri ca. Under normal advancement proce dure of officers in the association, Bro ther Banks will be elected President four years from now. Brother Banks was raised to the sub lime degree of Master Mason on May 2, 1950 by Orr Lodge No. 104, Washing ton, N.C. He became Master of Orr Lodge in 1956 and served for three years as District Deputy Grand Master of the Third Masonic District. Shortly after moving to New Bern in 1960, he became active in organizing another Blue Lodge. He was very successful in this effort and became the first Master of Berne Lodge No. 724. The lodge later elected him a life member. (Continued on Page Two) Clay County Masons Celebrate Centennial By j. Guy Padgett, P. M. Almost all of the lodges in the 65th Masonic District of North Carolina were represented at a dinner meeting of Clay Lodge No. 301, A. F. & A. M., when they observed the 100th year of service to the Hayesville community, Saturday night, October 4, 1969. Glenn Brown, a Waynesville attorney, civic leader and Baptist Layman was principle speaker. He was introduced by A. F. Padgett, a member of the local lodge and a Past District Deputy Grand Master. Worshipful Brother Henry Truett, District Deputy Grand Master, was present and led in pledging allegiance to the flag. James Howard Walker served as Master of Ceremonies and was intro duced by Worshipful Master, John F. (Continued on Page Two)
