Twin County Lodge
Honors Elmo E. Battle

Twin County Lodge No. 729, Rocky Mount,
held a special program on June 28, in honor ‘
of Brother Elmo Elsworth Battle who has a
50 year record of activity in all branches of
Masonry. The program had been planned with
out the knowledge of Brother Battle and was
a complete surprise to him until the program
was about to begin. While labor was dispensed
with members of the Battle family and other
friends were admitted and at this time “Broth
er Ed” was startled.
Brother Battle was presented an Honor
ary Membership certificate from Central
Cross Lodge No. 187 by Brother Jimmy Cobb,
Master. He was presented an Honorary Mem
bership certificate from Concord Lodge No.
58 by Brother Turner E. Felton, Master.
Brother Battle already held Honorary Mem
berships in Corinthian Lodge No. 230; Queen
City Lodge No. 602 and Morning Star Lodge
No. 85. This completed honorary membership
in all the lodges in the 18th Masonic District.
Brother Battle also holds a life membership in
Twin County Lodge No. 729 of which he is a
charter member,
A brief biography of Brother Battle was
given by Brother M. J. Stokes, P.M, and Secre
tary and included the following: Born, Dec.
14, 1893, Nashville, N. C. Received Degrees in
Queen (jity Lodge No. 602 in 1921 and was
Master of that lodge in 1925; Certified Lec
turer for 22 years; Honorary and Life mem
berships and fifty years of continuous mem
bership in Masonry; Coaching of candidates;
memberships and the conferring of Degrees in
the York and Scottish Rite; and membership
in Sudan Temple of the Shrine. Married to
the former Miss Myrtie Hinton in 1919; six
children and ten grand children. Retired
machinist.
A plaque was presented to Brother Battle by
Brother R. Ward Sutton, Master of Twin
County Lodge, and Brother Frank L. Yost,
D.D.G.M. of 18th Masonic District presented
a portrait of Brother Battle from Twin
County Lodge to be hung in the lodge room.

Grand Treasurer, on behalf of the Grand Mas
ter and the Grand Lodge of A. F. & A. M. of
N. C., in his usual splendid manner of presen
tations; presented Brother Battle a Fifty Year

Joseph Herbert Copeland, Sr., holding
certificate center above, received his 60 Year
Service Award in Ahoskie Lodge No. 684 on
June 3. Brother Copeland was raised April
22, 1910 in Luke McGlaughan Lodge No. 504
(now defunct) and served that lodge sev
eral terms as Master. He affiliated with Po-
tecasi Lodge No. 418 on September 23, 1944,
and become a charter member of Ahoskie
Lodge on May 4, 1949. All three of his sons
are Master Masons and appear in the above
picture. Edward, Past Master of Ahoskie
Lodge is on the left, Harrell is on the right,
and Joseph is in the rear. Brother Copeland
is the oldest member of Ahoskie Lodge and
its only 60-year member. A meal was pro
vided for the occasion by ladies of the East
ern Star.

i pressed his appreciation and surprise for the
i program and honors received on the occasion.
' He stated that his work in Masonry hc.J been
the greatest pleasure of his life. In his modest
' manner he stated that he did not think he
deserved all the honors received but was in
deed grateful.
j After closing the lodge the members and
visitors which totaled 93 were served refresh
ments in the ballroom of the Masonic Temple.
CORRECTION NOTICE
In our September issue we incorrectly list
ed Brother Daris Pete DeShazo among the
deceased members. Brother DeShazo is very
much alive. He recently demitted from Pied
mont Lodge No. 711 to affiliate with Abbe
ville Lodge No. 320 in Asheville, Mississippi
and somehow his name was transposed from
one list to the other. We sincerely regret any
embarrassment or confusion resulting from
the error.
