Master-®3 LaFayette Masonic Lodere No. 83 was the setting Saturday e'vening, September 18. 1971, fcr honoring an outstanding Mason for his con tribution to his community and Masonry. Worshipful Brother Frank Andrew Smi+^h i was born October 31, 1900, at Marines, N. C.. ' which is now part cf Marine Corps Ba=e, Camp Lejeune. He was educated in the public school there, and Wilson College in Wilson. North Carolina. He met his wife, the former Pearl Hurst, in 1918 and they were married the 20''h o^ April, 1924. They are the parents of Mrs. Annice Rhue of Maryland, and are the pioud grand parents of two lovely children. Brother Smith was employed by the U.S. Postal service on June 11, 1928, at Marines, North Carolina. He was appointed Post Master by President Warren G. Harding on Septem ber 15, 1928. He served in that capacity until the Pok Office at Marines was discontinued on September 30, 1941. He became a Postal Cleik in the Jacksonville Post Office on November 1, 1941. Brother Smith was appointed Post Mas ter of the Jacksonville Post Office in August 31, 1944, in which capacity he served until his retirement on November 30, 1965. Always desiring to serve his fellowman, he was elected to the Board of County Commis sioners for two terms. He was appointed to the County Board of Welfare on January 1, 1968, and is currently Chairman of that board. Brother Smith is an active member of the First Baptist Church, and is currently Chair man of the Board of Deacons. Brother Smith was initiated January 23, 1924, passed March 5, 1924, and raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on Novem ber 19, 1924. Having served in various ap pointed offices in his lodge, he was elected Junior Warden in 1945, Senior Warden in De cember, 1946, and Master in 1947. Following his term as Master, he has continued to serve on various committees. In recognition of his outstanding service he was elected to Life Membership in LaFayette Lodge several years ago. Brother Smith is a Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner. He is an active member of the 26° team, and was Knight Commander Count of Honor in October, 1969. Brother Frank Andrew Smith is indeed an outstanding man and Mason, who by his inde fatigable service to Masonry is an inspiration to the members of LaFayette Lodge. Former Superintendent Of M&ESH Dies September 29 From the Greensboro Daily News George Richard Bennette, 83, spuerintendent of the Masonic and Eastern Star Home in Greensboro for 30 years and a man known throughout North Ca rolina for Masonic ac tivities died Wednes day (September 29) in Wesley Long Hos pital. Bennette was a 33rd degree Mason and was class director of the Greensboro Scottish Rite for 24 years. He was a life member of Greensboro Lodge No. 76, three York Rite Bodies, four Scottish Rite bodies, the Orien tal Shrine Club and the Eastern Star Chapter Bennette, who lived at 2003 Madison Ave., in 1962 was app-ointed grand captain of the guard of the Grand Encampment, Knights Templar of the United States. Funeral was held at 2 p.m. Friday (October 1) at the First Baptist Church. In addition to his Masonic work, Bennett was a trustee of the Governor Morehead School for the blind for six four-year terms. He also ! was a longtime member of the Greensboro Ro tary Club, and had been its vice-president, board member and sergeant at arms. He was a native -of Enfield. Bennette is survived by his widow, the form er Adeline Gilbert; son, George G. Bennette of New York City; daughter, Mrs. John Cooper Shackleford of Greenville, S. C,; sisters, Mrs W. T. Eure of Roanoke Rapids and Mrs. S. E Hardee of Enfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the North Carolina Association for the Blind, 2415- F, Crabtree Blvd., Raleigh 27694. FROM THE GRAND SECRETARY This is to remind our lodge Secretaries that you should bring to the attention of your lodge at the first stated communication in November, the names of any and all members of your lodge who owe any amount of dues: PROVID ED, that you sent out notices on Form 23 be tween September 1st and 15th as required in Regulation 85-33. Your report of these delinquent members should be listed on Form 24, and a copy of this Form 24 must be sent to the Grand Secretary’s office within five days after your first stated communication in November. On this copy to the Grand Secretary you should list the amount due and the action taken on each delinquent member. If an extension of time in which to pay is granted by the lodge, please list the stated communication to which the extension was granted, and if later extensions are sub sequently granted, please note this information on the back of your Form 49 when reporting- other items acted on. GRAND LODGE AWARDS: It is our custom to mail out 25-year, 50-year, and 60-year awards requested by your lodge about 10 days before the scheduled date of pre sentation. If you have not received these awards by about five days before the presenta tion date, we suggest that you check with your post office before calling the Grand Secre tary’s office about them. It has frequently happened that in putting up your mail, these large envelopes that are too big for most post office boxes are laid aside and forgotten for the time being.
