CVIV—NO. 2 Large Crowd In Attendance at 197th Annual Communication Raleigh—The 197th Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of North Carolina was held April 17 and 18 in Memorial Auditorium, Raleigh. The Grand Lodge was called to order at 10 A.M., April 17, by W.- Brother James B. Garris, Jr., Master of American George Lodge No. 17, Murfreesboro. The Grand Lodge Officers were conducted to their stations and places by the Grand Marshal. M.W/. Brother Cecil J. Liverman, Grand Master opened the Grand Lodge in AMPLE FORM, received the distinguished guests and the Past Grand Masters. The Grand Master presented W..Brother J. William Copeland, Grand Orator of the Grand Lodge of North Carolina, who delivered the oration. This was followed by the reports of the Grand Treasurer, the Grand Secretary and various Boards and Commissions, as well as reports of the Board of Directors of The Masonic and Eastern Star Home and Oxford Orphanage. Before opening the Grand Lodge for the after noon session, Grand Master Liverman recognized W. .Brother Paul Etheridge, Jr., P.M., who pre sented Chris Grubbs, the State Master Councilor of the Order of DeMolay, who delivered a very interesting address. After calling the Grand Lodge from Refreshment to Labor W. .Brother Lauren R. Sharpe, Chairman of the Committee on Necrology, conducted a memorial service for the brothers who passed away during the past year. Most Worshipful Brother William B. Bellois, Past Grand Master, delivered the tribute to our late Past Grand Master George Dudley Humphrey, who passed away on January 22, 1984. DONALD R. MOUL Superintendent, Oxford Orphanage New Superintendent at Orphanage Oxford—Donald R. Moul will assume the duties as the new Superintendent of Oxford Orphanage on August 1, 1984. Moul, 48, is a native of Nebraska and holds a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Nebraska. He has had extensive experience as a teacher and in child care and development. He comes to the Orphanage after having served as Executive Director of Boys Town of North Carolina in Charlotte since January 1979. His experience includes: Juvenile Probation Officer, Lancaster County Juvenile Court, Lincoln, Nebraska; Superintendent, Masonic-Eastern Star Home for Children, Fremont, Nebraska; Program Director, Family Service Association, Lincoln, Nebraska; Social Services Training Officer, Direc tor of Foster Care for Children, Program and Planning Director, Department of Public Welfare, Nebraska; and Administrator, Family, Children and Youth Services, Division of Social Services, Nebraska Department of Public Welfare. In 1959 he married Sonja Pinnell of Fullerton, Nebraska and they have five children and one grandson. Brother Moul has been a Mason for over twenty- five years, and is a member of the Scottish Rite. Grand Master Cecil J. Liverman delivered his report, followed by reports of several more boards and commissions. During the report of the Board of Custodians it was noted that Brother Richard Ford, with the aid of the Blue Ridge Braillers, a volunteer group from Asheville, N. C. had produced the entire O.S.W. in braille for the use of those blind Masons who had need of it. The Grand Lodge was called from Labor to Refreshment until 9.00 A.M. Wednesday, April 18, 1984. All items requiring action by the Grand Lodge were balloted on including adoption of the budget. Grand Master Liverman presented the Joseph Montfort MedaI to W.■.BrotherWil Iiam Da vid Ford, Past Master of Oxford Lodge No. 122 and Business Manager of Oxford Orphanage and The Masonic and Eastern Star Home. He also recognized W '. Brother Albert Eugene Hill, P.M., Secretary of American George Lodge No. 17, and W..Brother Tyree James Callahan, P.M., Secretary of Royal Hart Lodge No. 497, who had received the award in special ceremonies in their home lodges earlier in the year. The Joseph Montfort Medal is the highest award given by our Grand Lodge, and is restricted to no more than three recipients per year. The Grand Master announced that it was time for election of Grand Lodge Officers and the election proceeded as scheduled. The election resulted as follows: Grand Master, Ira Boyd Hopkins, P.M.-691, Mount Airy; Deputy Grand Master, Norburn Creighton Hyatt, P.M .-118, Ashe ville; Senior Grand Warden, Walter Franklin McCall, P.M.-530, Charlotte; Junior Grand Warden, Eddie Phillips Stiles, P.M.-584, Apex; Grand Treasurer, James Woodrow Brewer, P.G.M.- 708, Greenville; and Grand Secretary, Robert Pete Duddly, P.M.-202, Raleigh. The Grand Lodge Officers, elective and appoin tive were installed following the final business session. The Committee on Credentials registered 1255 voting delegates consisting of the following: 1096 delegates representing 375 chartered lodges; four teen Grand Lodge Officers; eleven Past Grand Masters; thirty-four members of boards, commis sions and committees (not already listed in fore going categories); fifty-nine District Deputy Grand Masters and forty-one District Deputy Grand Lec turers. It is estimated that about 300 non-voting Masons also attended the Grand Lodge session. Board of Publication Seeking Editor For Paper Raleigh—At a meeting of the Board of Publica tion of The North Carolina Mason on June 8,1984, at the Grand Lodge Office in Raleigh a lengthy discussion was held on ways to improve "The North Carolina Mason.” All members of the Board were in attendance, as well as M/.W/.l. Boyd Hopkins, Grand Master and R.-.W.-.Norburn Hyatt, Deputy Grand Master. During the discussion it was decided that the number one priority is to secure an Editor. Grand Master Hopkins appointed Julian W. Helms, Chair man, William Fulmer, and Allen G. Colenda as a searcn committee to find an editor for the paper. Anyone interested in this position is asked to contact Allen Colenda, at the Orphanage Printing Department. Some of the changes proposed at the meeting will require action by the Grand Lodge, and they will be publicized so lodges will have an opportu nity to instruct their delegates how to vote. The North Carolina Mason belongs to the Masons in North Carolina and we want it to be as near what the Mason wish it to be as reason ably possible. BOYD HOPKINS Grand Master, 1984-1985 This Is Our New Grand Master Boyd was born the third of six children on Easter Sunday morning, March 31,1929, to Tommy Lee and Lillie Belle Little Hopkins in Norwood, North Carolina. Graduating from Norwood High School in 1 947, Boyd attended Mars Hill, Wingate, and Wake Forest Colleges. He was graduated from Carson- Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee, May, 1951, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and religion. He did further study at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Appala- chian State University, and several bahavioral science and human relations seminars. In June of 1951, Boyd joined the U. S. Army, took training in cryptography at the then Camp Gordon, Georgia. He then served until June, 1953, with the Seventh Division G-2 in Korea, reaching the rank of sergeant. After being discharged from the army, Boyd taught the liberal arts course for two years in the eighth grade in the Mount Gilead school in Montgo mery County. He taught English and speech for three years in the ninth and eleventh grades of the Norwood High School, Stanly County. In 1954, Boyd was ordained a minister in the Southern Baptist denomination and has served the following churches: Calvary in Norwood, 1954-58; North Morganton in Morganton, 1958- 63; Pleasant Grove in Ronda, 1964-71; Flat Rock in Mount Airy since November, 1971. Boyd has held several associational offices, serving as mod erator of the Elkin Baptist Association in 1968. In community life, Boyd has been a member of and an officer in Civitan, Ruritan, Cub Scout Committee, and the American Heart Association. Boyd's Masonic career began in June, 1958, when he was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Albemarle Lodge No. 703 in Albemarle. He served as chaplain in Catawba Valley Lodge No. 217, Morganton; is Past Master of Elkin Lodge No. 454, Elkin; is a member of Renfro Lodge No. 691, Mount Airy; served as District Education Chairman of the 47th Masonic District, 1970-73; was chairman of the Grand Lodge Committee on Masonic Education, 1973- 79; was Grand Chaplain, 1972-74; served as chairman of the Grand Lodge Necrology Com mittee; and in 1977 was appointed Grand Steward by Most Worshipful Brother J. Earl Watson. By virtue of being a Grnd Lodge officer, Boyd has served on various boards and committees of the Grand Lodge. In 1971, Past Grand Master Maurice E. Walsh presented Boyd the Joseph Montfort Medal for meritorious service to the Grand Lodge. Boyd is also Grand Representative to the Grand Lodge of Ireland near the Grand Lodge of North Carolina. Boyd is a member of the York Rite Bodies and has served as High Priest of Mount Airy Chapter (Continued on Page Two)
