I Official Publication of The Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free & Accepted Masons of North Carolina VOL. CX—NO. 1 Oxford, North Carolina 27565, March, 1985 ONE DOLLAR A YEAR Monroe—Brother Pete G. Williams, a member of Monroe Lodge No. 244, wanted to attend the lodge meeting, but due to a bad spell with arthritis, he knew he could not climb the stairs. His son, Worshipful C. Gore Williams, P.M., brought his crane and lifted his father in a high seat to the fire escape landing on the second floor. Brother Williams attended the meeting and was returned to the ground by the same method. How nice it would be if every Mason had that much desire to attend his lodge. Alan DeLeon Gray Former Superintendent Gray Called To Rest "Somewhere in living I discovered an axiom: "A man is lucky who has a wife who loves him, friends who trust him, children who admire him, a God who guides him, and a job so large that he must depend on all of them.” Soin his own words, Brother Alan DeLeon Gray described his career as Superintendent of Oxford Orphanage. Brother Gray laid down his working tools and journeyed into that country from whose born no traveler returns on Janurary 5,1985. He is survived by his wife, Saralee Willis Gray; a sister, Florence Sims at Brighton, Alabama and two adopted daughters. Brother Gray was Superintendent of Oxford Orphanage from 1946 until 1 973. Gray joined the North Carolina Methodist Conference in 1941 after receiving his Master of Divinity Degree from Duke University Divinity School. He served several pastorates in Eastern Carolina before coming to Oxford in November, 1946. Brother Gray's association with Masonry began on December 27, 1938 in his hometown of Brighton, Alabama when he became a Master Mason. He later demitted to Oxford No. 122 where he served as Master in 1952. Gray was awarded the Joseph Montfort Medal in 1955. He served as Grand Chaplain in 1956, 57, and 58, as well as numerous terms as Assistant Grand Chaplain. Brother Gray held numerous honorary memberships in lodges and Masonic-related ONE HUNDRED NINETY-EIGHTH ANNUAL COMMUNICATION OF THE GRAND LODGE OF ANCIENT, FREE AND ACCEPTED MASONS OF NORTH CAROLINA WILL BE HELD IN THE CITY OF RALEIGH NORTH CAROLINA TUESDAY, APRIL SIXTEENTH A. St. John's Day Scheduled for Saturday June 22,1985 Freemasons from across North Carolina will gather on the campus of Oxford Orphanage on Saturday, June 22 to celebrate the traditional Masonic holiday, St. John's Day. The event is held in honor of St. John the Baptist and also is the anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the first building on the Orphanage campus in the days when it was a college. Records show that St. John's Day was first celebrated in 1872 before the Orphanage formally opened in February of 1873. In those days it was an old fashioned 4th of July type of celebration with its picnic lunches and hand-cranked ice cream freezers; with speakers and marching bands. Steam locomotives ran excursion trains from Raleigh. Masons would gather there to take special trains to Oxford. During the 20's the event often drew crowds of over 20,000 visitors. The Great Depression of the 30's took its toll and the event was cancelled in 1936 by Superintendent Creasy K. Proctor because of the polio epidemic. Revived in the 1970's by the Board of Directors, St. John s Day drew literally thousands of Masons, their families and friends from across the state to meet for a full day of fun and fellowship. June 22,1985 will be no exception. Expected for this year's celebration will be between 12 and (Continued on Page Two) DeMolay—Grand Master's Class Holds Annual Meeting By Frank L.
