TAR HEEL STATE . ."CARING FOR OUR CHILDREN AND OUR ELDERLY Oxford Orphanage Masonic & Eastern Star Home Official Publication of The Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free & Accepted Masons of North Carolina VOL. CXIII — NO. 6 Oxford, North Carolina Report From The Grand Master I did not believe the excitement and joy of April 19th (election and installation) could continue or be surpassed, but I really believe it has. There have been so many phone calls, cards, letters and words of congratulations from friends, neighbors and co-workers. Words seem inadequate, but I hope a heartfelt “thanks” will suffice at the moment. There are so many things available and going on that it is impossible to participate in all of Jerry Gordon Tart, Grand Master them. The week following our Annual Communication I attended the Two Hundred Fifty Second Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina. They were excellent hosts and my wife, Zee, and I had a most enjoyable time. The Grand Lodge sessions were interesting and informative. There have been Board meetings, Committee meetings and all sorts of correspondence to be dealt with. Final plans were made for District Meetings and these began on May 11th. The attendance has been excellent. Many old friends have been seen and I have met a host of new brethren and hopefully made a lot of new friends. I look forward to seeing many of you as the District Meetings continue. We have two very important dates coming up: June 24th and August 25th. Please mark these on your calendar if you have not already done so. The first, June 24th, is St. John’s Day at Oxford Orphanage. I hope you are planning to attend. An excellent program of entertainment has been planned by Brother Lloyd Young, Chairman of the St. John’s Day Committee. It is a wonderful opportunity to visit Oxford Orphanage and meet the children we provide for at this time. You will also witness an outstanding parade by the three Shrine Temples in North Carolina plus some additional units. The other entertainment will likewise be outstanding and enjoyable. You will also see many old friends and make many new friends. I will be looking for you at Oxford Orphanage on June 24th. On August 25th, we will have the 2nd Annual Masonic and Eastern Star Home Golf Tournament in Greensboro. This Golf Tournament is jointly sponsored by the Grand Chapter, Order of Eastern Star and the Grand Lodge. Those participating and others attending the Golf Tournament last year had a most enjoyable time. It was an outstanding success and the Planning Committee is anticipating even greater participation and success this year. The profits from the tournament will be contributed to the special fund established for the construction of the addition to the Care Center at the Masonic and Eastern Star Home. You do not have to play golf to attend this golf tournament and have a most enjoyable day. Attending will afford you the opportunity to renew old friendships and make many new friends. You can tour the Masonic and Eastern Star Home and meet the residents. Other activities are being planned. Watch for further announcements about the Golf Tournament and plan to attend. I will be looking for you in my home town—Greensboro—during the Golf Tournament. Summer is here and that means vacation time for many. As you make these vacation plans, remember to set aside time to attend your Lodge meetings. Your attendance and participation is earnestly solicited. You are missed when you are absent. We all lose by not sharing in good fellowship together. I wish for each of you and your family a safe, happy and delightful summer. Eagle Scout Masons Almost a year ago, in response to a request by Brother Kenneth H. Grace, 5434 West 134th Street, Hawthorne, California 90250- 4912, we began requesting that Masons who are Eagle Scouts send Brother Grace brief outlines of your scouting and Masonic backgrounds for use in a nationwide listing he is compiling. We have also requested that you send copies of this information to us. Like so many other items, we could not get the listing into our May issue; as a consequence, we have a double load to report this month: C. Coke Leggett, member of Scotland Neck 689, has been an Eagle Scout since 1940. G. Keith Abbott, member of Twin County 729, became an Eagle in 1956,4s a member of the Order of the Arrow, served as Patrol Leader and Senior Patrol Leader, attended 1957 National Jamboree, served as Scoutmaster. Duncan, PM-405, became an Eagle in 1933, he is a member of the Order of the Arrow, served as Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Scoutmaster and Scoutmaster. Bret R. Catching Up Several of the articles and pictures in this issue have been on hand for a month or more. We could not run them earlier because of our ever present space problems. We still have some leftovers, but hope to gradually clear the backlog. Is MJ Jin 2 June, 1989 Newland — Grand Master Jerry G.Tart is shown above with the three Masons that arranged for the meeting of the 58th and 62nd Districts here on May 18. They are, from left, Tommy Singleton, Master of Linville Lodge No. 489, the host lodge; Phil Pickens, DDGM-62; the Grand Master; David Terrell, DDGM-58, of the host district. ^ 1 District Meetings — 1989 District meetings are now in progress in all areas of the state; in fact, they are over half completed. Attendance and interest have been good. The format is familiar to Masons that have attended district meetings in previous years: Dinner is served by the host lodge at 6:30 and the lodge opens at 7:30. District Deputy Grand Masters and then the Grand Master are officially received, the roll is called, Masonic officials are recognized, presentations are made by Home Superintendent Tommy Jones and Orphanage Superintendent Dave Grissom, Grand Secretary Pete Dudley explains the proposed changes to THE CODE to be voted upon next April and other matters of interest to the Craft, then Grand Master Jerry G. Tart delivers his address and closes the lodge. District meetings this year are preceded by area meetings held by Superintendents Grissom and Jones with the Orphanage and Home Committees from each lodge. The remaining schedule of district meetings follows: DATE DISTRICTS HOST DISTRICT HOST LODGE LOCATION June 22 17-18 17 Wilson 712 Wilson July 13 38-39 38 Pee Dee 150 Norwood July 18 40-41-42 42 West Gate 738 Charlotte July 25 54-55-56 55 Holland Memorial 668 Gastonia July 27 51-52 52 Mount Moriah 690 Statesville July 28 12-15 15 Mill Creek 125 Newton Grove August 1 14-30 30 Raeford 306 Raeford August 10 21-33 33 Butner 697 Butner August 11 22-23 22 Wake Forest 282 Wake Forest August 15 53-57 57 Lovelady 670 Valdese August 17 10-13 10 Federal Point 753 Wilmington 319 August 22 16-27 27 Kenly 257 Kenly NOTE: The host lodge, with the assistance of the host District Deputy Grand Master, will make arrangements for the meal. St. John’s Day at Oxford Annual Celebration Oxford — The 1989 celebration of St. John’s Day will take place on the campus of Oxford Orphanage on Saturday, June 24. It is anticipated that several thousand Masons and their guests will gather on that date to enjoy the entertainment, the free meal, the fellowship, and the opportunity to mingle with our wonderful Orphanage children. Activities commence at 10 a.m. with “Sparkle,” an all-county group of singing youngsters from grades through the eighth. Some 100 units from Oasis, Sudan and Amran Shrine Temples will be featured in the parade which begins at 10:30, marching through Oxford to the Orphanage campus. Certain units will remain on campus during the afternoon to provide additional entertainment, particularly for the youngsters. Free lunch on campus will follow the parade. After lunch, the Grand Master and other on-stage guests will be recognized. Vocalist Stella Parton appears at 2:00 p.m. Stella has delighted audiencies everywhere with her songs and style. She writes her own music. (Stella is pictured here.) Most children’s cottages, along with the farm and the athletic department will provide booths where you may purchase anything from souvenirs to ice cream, hot dogs to you-name- it. This celebration provides unequalled opportunity to be entertained, to enjoy a picnic-style meal, to be with our Orphanage children, to tour the campus—to have a whole lot of fun! It will be a good idea to bring folding chairs.
