I saw as I came down the moun tain from Asheville, North Carolina, that remarkable geyser, where engi neers have led down the stream of water from a mountain reservoir and have turned it loose in the valley, where it leaps forty feet in the air, wreathing itself in fairy mist and elfin spray, all night long veiling itself in the starlight, beckoning up itself in fairy garments as it sobs to the morning sun with its ghosty fin ger, and at the dawn in gladness spreading its gossamer rainment and welcoming the sferise with a rain bow. I thought as I gazed upon it that it was typical of the transforma tion wrought in the life of a moun tain boy where some hunble, conse crated teacher has led down the gen ial current of his soul from the bar ren crags of his boyhood into the warm valley of his adolescence, and there released his pent-up powers till in the darkness of the present he hurls himself heavenward in his as pirations for mankind, though he is often beaten back to earth by his hu man limitations—amid the darkness of the present, beckoning in the dawn of a gentler humanity, becoming one of the race’s seers, idealists, preach ers, poets, editors, publicists, humani tarians, becoming what Edv/in Mark ham called “an heroic star-led man.” Harry Clark. Harry was absent from school. A small sister handed the following note to his teacher: “Dear Teacher Harry cut his toe yesterday swimin he cant come to school he has toemane poison respectful His Mother.” I have always been a teacher; I have not ceased to be a learner. In the one capacity, I must tell the little that I know; in the other I must strive after some glimpse of the im measurable light beyond.—James Martineau. Some of the strongest, most famous men of the world have been educated and given their “Chance in Life” by the indomitable courage and energy of their widowed mothers. What should we thing of a man, with a man’s strenght, who claims that he cannot send his children to school? Under present conditions on the farm it does not seem possible to have school terms as long as those in the cities. This being the case it is the more necessary that there should be better teachers in the country schools. We ought to make up in quality of teaching what we lack in lenght of term.
