Knowing, as many of us do, what the Roman Catholic Church stands for, its past history and its present action, would America be safe in the hands of Roman Catholicism? Roman Catho licism has its head at Rome and not at Washing ton, D. C., and works through his people to carry forward his church at the expense of the state fostering parochial schools and a state church maintained by the state wherever in power. In 1919 there were only 27 Protestant churches in Washington, D. C. The remaining ones were Catholic. Their slogan today is, “Catholic America.” They are using many ways to usurp power. Mainly are they training their people to be governmental leaders. Whenever they are in power we find either religious suppression or religious toleration. Today Amer ica enjoys religious liberty. Should Catholics come in power to lead we would have religious toleration or likely religious suppression. By religious toleration we mean there would be a union of church and state, and the state church, whatever it may be, must first be fostered by taxes through the state funds. Then if any group can foster their church it is up to them to do it individually. If any person’s religion would involve him so as to destroy Americanism, then we need to beware. Should I vote for Mr. Alfred E. Smith— 1. I must vote for one who by his religious afflictions stands against the high ideals and principles our forefathers stood for. 2. I must vote for one who stands for things that God Almighty in heaven condemned. If God teaches against excessive wine and strong drink, and Jesus Christ on Calvary’s cross re fused it in the hour of suffering to relieve pain, then why should I not take my stand against it as a Christian? 6, i must vote ior one wno tavors tne return of immoral houses and immorality. God’s Word teaches righteousness, holiness and purity. The morals of women have decreased 22 per cent in the past five years while the morals of men have increased 18 per cent. 4. I must vote for a Tammany Hall man, a man put in by the ring of politicians and not by the people. I cannot see democracy in this, but rather anarchy. Jeffersonian democracy did not stand for what the Democratic nominee of today stands for. While Governor Alfred E. Smith has been four times governor of New York State, each time he has been put in by New YorkHity, not carrying a majority only in a few of the precincts outside. New York City is com posed of about 85 per cent foreigners and this element have elected him. 5. I must vote for a man who became traitor to his own party at the convention at Houston, Texas, when he refused to accept all the planks in the platform as drawn up by the Democratic party. 6. I must vote for a wet leader, a man who favors an amendment to the Volstead act by increasing the percentage of liquor or beverage used. The wet Republican, Mr. Rascob, became his leader in his campaign, resigning from the General Motors company with the promise of being welcomed back at close of campaign. 7. I must vote for one who believes in open ports—which eventually is a means to increas ing America with Catholics until they can lead. Sixty-five percent of the immigrants to America, it is said, are Catholics. With open ports at this rate how long would it take for Catholics once to get in power and remain in power with the pope at Rome dictating? These things may sound like Democracy to some folks, but it does not to me. You can’t carry fire and water in the same pocket at the same time. Shall I be loyal to a party or shall I ring true to high ideals, aims and principles? Should I as a minister sit still and not express myself? No. Nathan rebuked King David of sin; Elijah castigated King Ahab and Jezebel; Ozariah re buked King Ozziah; John the Baptist, the first gospel preacher of the New Testament era, rebuked King Herod, and paid for it with his life. The question of today is not only a political question, but also a great moral issue is at stake. Should Mr. Alfred E. Smith become elected, the White House would become an open door for priests, cardinals, and the pope. Religiously speaking, could Mr. Smith be influenced? Ques tion: If Mr. Smith as Governor would bow down in obeisance to the pope of Rome, would he not do so as the President of the United States? The mass was not satisfied in the Old Testa ment times with the judges and clamored for a king. God permitted them to have a king (King Saul) but oh! how Israel suffered. Every true believer in the Lord Jesus Christ should make this a matter of prayer. If Jesus Christ is the Lord of my life and my Master, I should seek to do His will and not yield to the opinon of the mass. The early church gives us a wonderful model. When a successor was to be chosen to fill Judas’ place, two were named and the church took the matter to God in prayer and then cast lots (voted) and Mathias was elected. When I must help decide the question of this kind should I do it by saying I wont vote for either? No. I must help put in the better of the two as I am led after careful study and prayer. Never have preachers entered a cam paign so heartily. I speak for no one else but as for myself, as things are now, I shall vote for Hoover, the world citizen, the great humani tarian, the great organizer, the man of world vision, the man with expert knowledge of flood control on the Mississippi, the man nominated by the people, not the politicians, and the man whose personal habits, conscientious convictions and political creed on prohibition are in harmony with his platform and on the right side. Why as a minister do I depart from my usual custom and publicly express a political opinion? Answer: First, as a Christian I have a con science; secondly, as a citizen I have a duty. Neither of these can be evaded when a great moral issue is at stake.
