COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT RESIGNS County Superintendent P. G. Gallop offered his resignation, to take effect June 30, 1941. After serving as County Superintendent of Pamlico County for two years, he came to Hyde County in 1937 and has served here for six years. The schools have made quite a bit of progress under his superin tendency. He has been actively engaged in every progressive movement in the county. Mr. Gallop was instrumental in organizing the Hyde County Fair Association, the Hyde County Chamber of Commerce and the Swanquarter Lions Club. Superintendent Gallop has also devoted much time to the work of fraternal organizations in Hyde County as a Mason, Scottish Rite and Shriner, and as an Odd Fellow. Mr. Gallop is also the dynamo behind the forth coming celebration of the 230th anniversary of Hyde County by a homecoming celebration May 8-11. A handbook on Hyde County schools Mr. Gallop published last summer has attracted wide favorable comment, and WPA lunchrooms established in the schools under his administration are ranked as the finest in the district. Student NYA activities, out-of -school NYA activi ties and National Defense classes have all been or ganized and are being directed under his admin istration. o U. W. TARKINGTON Mr. U. W. Tarkington of Belhaven, N. C, has served the people as merchant in his community for 34 years in a splendid way. Recently he reno vated and modernized his store. His customers have stayed with him down through the years. He tells me that he has nine customers that have traded with him for 34 years. It must be a good place to trade. Mr. Tarkington runs a clean place and handles quality goods, gives splendid service and has right prices. Mr. Tarkington welcomes the people of this en tire section to his place. See his ad elsewhere in this magazine. Mr. Tark ington is a man of conviction and stands for high ideals and is a member and an officer of the Bel haven Baptist Church. o MEYEROWITZ DEPT. STORE We regret to see Mr. Meyerowitz leave Belhaven. He now has on a big sale, selling out his stock com pletely. He is to go back to Washington, D. C, we understand, and open a business. He is selling out his stock at attractive prices. He invites the people of Hyde County to visit his store during the sale. Likely many will find bargains in the things they need. Mr. Meyerowitz was successor to Harry Raiffs. He has served the public well these years. Many people regret to see him leave. o Great works are performed, not by strength, but by perseverance. Yonder palace was raised by single stones, yet you see its height and spaciousness. He that shall walk with vigor three hours a day will pass in seven years a space equal to the circumfer ence of the globe. ii If iHiin!)wi n Tirr nt fflj--"' an'""r '' i And you have not renewed. We suggest that both white and colored people put on a general spring cleaning. Many have begun already to rake their yards and burn or haul away the trash and rubbish. It is for the good of your health and the health of others that you rid your premises of all old tin cans and other articles that will hold water and breed mosquitoes. Before you haul away your cans, see that each can has holes punched through the bottom. The writer suggests a still better way dig, or have dug, a large hole somewhere on your prem ises and bury all of this. It does not look so well to those traveling the highways to see large and small piles of waste by the roadside. Repair your fences, repair your dwelling houses, barns and outhouses. Paint helps to beautify. If you cannot paint, then whitewash. Whitewashing with lime, flour and a little salt. It costs very little to whitewash. Help make Hyde County more attractive in ap pearance by beautifying your premises. Plant shrub bery and flowers and put out fruit trees. Plan for a good garden, raise more hogs, sheep, cows, ducks, geese, chickens and live at home. Clean up! Clean up! Clean up! o MARRIAGES Langston-Berry On Friday, February 21, 1941, Miss Lucy Leigh Berry, daughter of Mrs. W. T. Berry, was united in wedlock to Mr. William Henry Langston of Golds boro. They were married in the Methodist par sonage at Dillon, S. C. Roland E. Blake of Fairfield, N. C, to Mrs. Mattie Ballance of Swanquarter, N. C, February 24. PAGE 3
