Wednesday, November 22, 1967 THE ROCKETEER Page 3 Rockets Down Patriots; Battle Sanford Friday Rocket Defense Shines; Team Wins Season Crown Behind the scoring of Larry Holeman and Tim Taylor, the Rockets overpowered West Car teret by a score of 13-7 Friday night. Roxboro will now meet San ford, who beat its opponent, Pine Forest, 35-0 Friday night, in the state semi-finals Novem ber 24. The game will be played Friday night in Durham County Stadium. A scoreless first half led to an explosive second half with Tim Taylor traveling ten yards for a touchdown and quarterback RHS Cogers Begin Season Practice Larry Holeman returning a punt 75 yards for a score. The Rockets lost only two games during the regular sea son—one conference, Jordan, and one non-conference, Hali fax. Roxboro’s best and most de cisive game of the season was its win over Northern of Dur ham, the second-place team in the conference. Although Northern’s confer ence record was identical to Roxboro’s, the Rocket win over Northern put Roxboro in the top position. Roxboro has shown up very impressive this year with Larry Holeman completing approxi mately 65 passes. RHS Head Coach Larry Dixon watches his team on the goal line with a few seconds left. The RHS Rockets wrapped up their 1967 regular football sea son by copping their fifth Dis trict III Championship in seven years. Offensive line Coach Reid Davis pointed out that this year’s offense was less explosive than last year’s, but that the de fense came up with the big play when they were called on, for example, the crucial pass inter ceptions in the Northern and Cary games. “RHS has a young team; there are nine juniors on the starting defensive unit,” Coach Davis added. During the season, the Rock ets altered many of last year’s statistics. The following is a comparison of these two year’s statistics: Statistics ’66 ’67 Wins-Losses 8-2 9-1 Yards Rushing 1557 1964 Passes Attempted .... 104 165 Passed Completed .... 62 68 Yards Passing 551 1173 Total Offense 2108 3137 Total Points 192 326 Single Game High .... 38 54 Avg. Tim Taylor led the Rockets in rushing with 801 yards. Keith Hall was the top pass receiver with 27 grabs for over 300 yards. Varsity basketball practice bounced to a successful start at the beginning of the month with a large turn-out of 26 boys. Last year’s lettermen, Mike Slaughter, Keith Hall, Cleve Buchanan, and Larry Holeman head the list of those who will return. Larry Newton, Victor Williford, and Bob Shackleford head the list of last year’s J.V. players who are vying for a varsity spot. Anthony Oakley, Carl Jones, and varsity football players Reed Marston and Doug Latta are counted on for help in the varsity. Mark Slaughter, Doug Shaw, and Jimmy Wilkins are leading candidates from the freshman team. Others from this squad include Bill Corbett, Fred Mor ris, Brad Ferguson, Cleve Wag staff, Bill Gentry, David Broach and Winston Forsyth. Others trying for a bid on the varsity squad who didn’t play last year are Rick Hunt and Martin Vernon, Jr. Coach Davis feels that Jordan, Garner, Chapel Hill, Northern, and Cary will all be tough oppo nents for the Rockets this year. When asked about how his own team stacked up, Davis described them as being “young, inexperi enced, and small,” but said, “they will improve as the sea son progresses.” Dixon Leads Rockets to 3»A Win Coach Larry Dixon in his first year as RHS grid coach has suc cessfully led the Rockets to the District 3 Championship. A native of Washington, N. C., Coach Dixon is married and has four boys. He attended North Carolina State and received his B.S. degree. While at State he was on the varsity Wolfpack squad for three years. He tied the extra point record. In addition to ex tra points, he kicked field goals and played offensive and de fensive tackle. After graduating in 1959, he and his wife moved to Roxboro. He has taught and coached in Person County for eight years.
