Friday, February 23, 1968 THE ROCKETEER Page 3 Tourney Starts Feb. 27 So Team Should Be Ready Roxboro’s Rockets, currently in sixth place in the District 3-A, have swept three of their last six games. The Rockets defeated Webb, Orange, and Cary in league battle by come-from-be- hind tactics. In all three games the Rockets were down at the half, but their second half won the three games for them. Doug Shaw was either the leading scorer or one of the leading scorers in each of the three games. He seems to have gained the game experience every basketball player needs in order to help his team. Roxboro’s full court press, which has been used in all of its games this year, was a prin cipal factor in the Rockets’ vic- tories. teams tions, The starts Jordan, undefeated in league play, overall play, and ranking high in the state, is favored to retain its championship. Chapel Hill, Garner, and Northern are close seconds. This is the high point of the year for all the teams, and the Rockets should be ready for it. Three Cagers Expected Back For Coming J. V. District 3-A Tournament Wednesday, February 27. ^1 ^ Davis, Dixon Hope For Strong Team In Mile, Discus Coaches Reid Davis and Larry Dixon expressed their confidence in Roxboro High’s prospects for the ’68 track team this season. Coach Dixon stated RHS’s best prospects lie in the mile, half mile, shot put and discus. As the training season prog resses, Jimmy Wilkins, Steve Schoch, and Rob Fitzgerald are emerging as the strongest in the running events. Chris Teague has taken over the most prospec tive position in field events, es pecially shot put and discus. (See picture at left.) Magicians Dazzle Crowd With Antics Lead by five steady starters and a strong bench, the Roxboro J. V. basketball team, coached by Clayton Johnson, has won 13 of 15 games. Their only losses of the season to date, were to Cary and Jor^n. Every man on the starting lineup at the first of the season has been a high scorer in at least one game during the season. Carl Jones and Fred Morris are the top scorers for the team. Billy Corbett, who cracked a bone in his foot, is out for the rest of the season. Anthony Oak ley, Cleve Wagstaff, and Barry Walker were sidelined during the season. They are expected back for tournament action, though. The tournament starts after varsity tournament action is fin ished. The dates are not known as yet for the J. V. tourney. When members of the team were asked if they thought they would win the tournament, they said “yes”. Asked why, they said because “we have a strong bench and plenty of confidence.” A Pat and a Kick Sophomore Doug Shaw Sparks Team in Second-Half Rallies Sophomore Doug Shaw came off the Rocket bench to spark RHS wins in several come-from- behind games. Doug commented that he considered the game against Orange as his best. Sophomores, college and high school, who have “made good” provide inspiration for Doug. Bill Bradley is Doug’s “idol, be cause of his ability to do every thing well.” “He would make a good 4-A or college basketball coach,” and plays ‘sensible basketball’,” he explained. Doug thinks RHS should have a strong team next year. The varsity loses only three seniors and the upcoming J. V. prospects Since the Rockets’ game with Webb has been played, and everything seems to have turned out OK, now may be the time (if there ever is one) for RHS’- ers, faculty, and citizens of Per son County to commend them selves in one breath, and to give themselves a good, swift kick in another. Everyone who is in the least bit interested in the county’s largest high school should be commended for his non-partici pation in the unfortunate inci dent at Oxford. These same good citizens are to be handed a medal for the spirit in which they responded to the appeal for nothing out of the ordinary, to be specific, revenge, to happen Tuesday night. Many RHS’ers have so much school spirit that they are will ing to “take on” anyone who says anything against the good name of RHS. These people are to be especially commended for their “will power” to continue the good name of RHS. On the other hand, it is a shame and disgrace that the possibility of a little “extra ac- Person Countians were rolling in the aisles of the RHS gym Saturday as the Fabulous Har lem Magicians dazzled the crowd with their antics. He really knows what he is talking about,” he added. Doug thinks the tournament coming up could go either way. “If we can get in fourth place, I think we will have a good chance,” he offered. Billy Chambers of Jordan is considered by Doug to be the best player in the conference. “He is quick, a good shooter, HELEN'S Beauty Salon The Latest Hair Style Allensville School Road Helen Slaughter Nellie Riley THE FINEST OPERATORS should be of great help to team.
