Class of 69 To Graduate
Graduation week at RHS
began Sunday with the Bac
calaureate sermon which was
held in Rocket Stadium at
8 p.m.
The Rev. W. F. West, Jr.
spoke to the 245 graduating
RIIS seniors.
Mr. West is a 1939 gradu
ate of RHS. He was saluta-
tcGan of his class and also
1 'Rtor of the high school paper
in his senior year.
He was ordained to the
ministry at Roxboro Baptist
Church in June 1945. He now
has a church at Hartwell,
Georgia, where he is residing.
Graduation exercises are
scheduled for tonight at 8 p.m.
in the school stadium. In case
of rain the services will be
moved co the gym.
Mr. R. P. Burns, also a
graduate of RHS, will give
the graduation address.
He is an associate profes
sor of architecture and head
of the Department of Archi
tecture at N. C. State Univer
sity.
Mrs. Doris Delp, senior
class sponsor, and Mrs. Annie
Belle Duncan of the RHS
faculty are responsible for
planning and supervising the
graduation events at RHS.
Miss Gertrude Holt super
vised the selection and activi
ties of the class marshals.
Senior Class President Brooks
Langston exemplifies the Senior
spirit of ’69 by staying on the top
of things.
Summer School
Begins June 9
To End July 18
Summer school will be held at
RHS this summer from June 9
through July 18.
If a student enrolls he must
attend the full 30 days. Make-up
classes will be held five days a
week, for 30 days and will last
two and a half hours a day. If a
student failed both semesters, class
will be for 30 full days, five hours
a day and 5 days a week.
A tuition of $30 is charged for
make-up subjects, and $50 for a
new subject. Classes will function
from 7 a.m. to 12 noon. Also 2%
hour classes from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m.
Mrs. Delp, one of the Senior spon
sors, deserves a big hand for all
the work she has done toward
graduation.

about going to college, but many
have already started. These people
applied for scholarships several
months ago. Some didn’t win, some
did, and others are still competing.
Jimmy Wade has won a $1550
scholarship from Duke. He also
won the Hankins scholarship from
Wake Forest for $500, and a Uni
versity scholarship to UNC-Chapel
Core Group To Meet In Summer
To Plan Guides For Next Year
Meetings began last month for
the 1969-1970 — Core Committee
under the supervision of Core Com
mittee Chairman Tommy Holt. The
Core Committee will be in charge
of all school activities and act as
temporary student council during
the summer and the first six weeks
of the next school year.
During the summer the Core
Committee will undertake
such
projects as orientation booklets for
sophomores, revision of Student
Council constitution, guides for the
beginning of school, teacher’s tea
before school and co-ordinating ac
tivities between schools.
The RHS Corp Committee is
composed of sophomores — Sarah
Holeman, Kenneth Clayton, juniors
—Sandy Cates, Nita Oakley and
seniors — Betty Duncan, Keith
Rogers, and Frances Hicks all
from Helena High.
Members from Person County
High include sophomores — Kathy
Bradsher, Linda Jackson, juniors—
Raymond Perry, Theresa Little and
seniors — Patricia Spencer, Gwen
Burton and Gale Dickens.
Members from Roxboro High
include — sophomores — John Pol
lock, Connee Carver, juniors —
Genie Rogers, Tom Fitzgerald,
seniors — Shelby Wiley, Cindy
Woody and Tommy Holt.
Hill for $300.
Beth Hester won from Greens
boro College an honor scholarship
for $500.
Ginger Dunkley won a $2250
grant and loan from Duke. She
also won a State Teachers scholar
ship and the Mary Ann Smith
scholarship to UNC at Chapel Hill.
The Whitaker scholarship from
Duke for $3300, a General Motors
scholarship for $1500 to State all
belong to Marvin Branscome. Mar
vin has also won the Competitive
Freshman scholarship to Columbia
University.
Eddie Oakley has a $1200 Uni
versity Distinguished Scholars
scholarship to Carolina.
A Veteran’s scholarship goes to
Carolyn Hall.
Wayne Lunsford goes to David
son with a $2550 scholarship. He
got a $1200 scholarship to Caro
lina also.
Ray Woody has a $850 scholar
ship to North Carolina State. Vicky
Denny has also won a scholarship
to N. C. State.
Bobbie Brandon was the local
Betty Crocker Contest winner.
Kathie Overby and Gary Hall also
won local scholarships. Kathie won
the Roxboro Womens Club scholar
ship and Gary won the Roxboro
Indian Head scholarship.
Donna Garrett and Foster
Massey won a state Teachers
scholarship. Benard Pulliam won a
$1200 scholarship to A&T. Jean
Dunn will go to Appalachian with
a $1000 scholarship and aid work
loan.
Janice Jones got $200 from the
Durham Alumnae Chapter of Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority.
Sarah Garah won a $1600 schol
arship from Wake Forest and Billy
Yoder won a $1500 scholarship to
UNC at Chapel Hill.
“The March of Dimes scholar
ship will be announced at gradu
ation,” stated Mrs. Harris, RHS
guidance counselor.
RHS Band To Travel To Myrtle Beach
Will Take Part In Sun Fun Festival
The Roxboro High School Band,
under the direction of Mr. Mike
Cannon, travels to Myrtle Beach,
South Carolina on June 5 to par
ticipate in the Sun-Fun Festival.
The 82-member band shall leave
Roxboro on June 5.

judged in

and on the 7th will be judged in
concert competition.
The Sun-Fun Festival is an an
nual event for Myrtle Beach. Bands
from all the East Coast arrive for
the event.
This will be the first time the
RHS Band has traveled to this
event. Also, it will be only the
second time they have participated
in marching competition. (The first
time was in Vinton where they
marched away with 2nd place in
the top division.)
“Bandology” will be played in
marching competition. At the con
cert, they shall play “Chorale For
Band, “Bandology,” “Sonations for
Band,” “Two Pieces in Folksong-
Style,” and “Ceremony for Winds.”
The trip will cost approximately
$2500. In the hopes that no in
dividual would have to bare the
money burden, the members have
sponsored bake sales, a sock hop
and a car wash. They have also re
ceived donations from several local
organizations and individuals.
Student Council President, Marvin Branscome caught in his daily act
of making announcements. This young man deserves a lot of credit
for his all-round leadership.
