CONGRATULATIONS PARENTS OF GRADUATES L Banker BEST OF LUCK TO SENIORS Volume XII—Number IV Roxboro, North Carolina, June, 1967 Price; Twenty Cents Library Club Observes National Library Week The annual paperback book fair was the main event during' National Library Week this year. By noting the number of books bought by the students one would have to term it a great success. Members of the club who worked at the fair stated that popular fiction on romance, hotrodding, and science fiction were among the top sell ers. The Club plans to sponsor another fair during Book; Week in November. To culminate the observance the club sponsored a quiz pro gram in chapel. Contestants were representatives from the various clubs at the school. Gladys Lawson, representative of the Honor Society won first prize. The FHA took second place with Faye Yarborough as representative. Third place was shared by Louise Winstead of the Journal Club and Shirley Jones of the Student Athletic CouncB. UTERARY CLUB IS ORGANIZED Honor Society Holds Induction The Person Chapter of the National Honor Society held its annual induction 'ceremony o.h March 24, in the Person County High gymnasium. The ceremony began at 10:30. Gladys Lawson, president of the chapter, presented a wel coming message to the audience. In her speech she stressed the qualities held most high by the Society: character, leadership, service, and citizenship. Mr. MacLouis Clayton, a 1954 graduate and member of the Society, presented congratulato ry remarks to the candidates for induction. In his speech he of fered a challenge to the student body and congratulated the can didates in that they had met the challenge. Candidates for induction into the provisional chapter were Beverly Baird, Bertha Russell, and Howard Russell. Stella Davik was inducted as a full member into the Society. After the ceremony a recep- (Continued on page 6) The Literary Club was formed in February, 1967 by students interested in employing various techniques used in literature. The purpose of the club is to enhance the students’ apprecia tion of literary works and to give them the opportunity . to express themselves. Person County High School In Appreciation To the principal and facitlty: We the class of 1967 Wish to extend to you our deepest and sincere thanks for your guidance during our stay here. It has helped us broadened our worM of knowledge. For this we are very grateful. We shall always try to live up to the Ideals which, you have instilled in us. As we go forward from Person County High School we are going to strive to always behave in a maimer befitting a student of P.C.H.S. We will miss all of you, but go we must. As students we know we have caused you to have many head aches and lose much sleep. We have presented many problems. As we leave more will come and the cycle will repeat year after year. You will never have a let up, but someone must do the job of educating the young. We are glad that you chose to do the job. We shall always be grateful for your kindness, help and guidance. So again we give you our sincere thanks. After all, all writers began just as they are beginning. Being a Literary Club member makes the student more aware of their surroundings. For ex ample, Linda Mitchell writes poetry when she is in “a certain mood.” Other students write from their background and ev eryday experiences. ' Sihce most of them range in age from 14 to 17. subjects which interested them most were loye, youth, nature and beauty, and' existing situations. Should they continue writing, however, one would note that their writings which are how romantic with everything ends- happily themes eventually give way to realistic, bitter tragical writings. Moreover their ideas would become more involved, more cohiplex with double meanings and symbols. At this stage life is simple, beautiful and explainable. The club officers are; Cather ine Blackwell, president; Robert Blackwell, vice-president; Betty Corbett, assistant secretary; and James Crutchfield, treasurer. Before school closes the club intends to publish a literaryi pamphlet containing club mem bers’ writings and to attend a theater party in Durham, Student Body Elects New Officers Recently, election for Student Council officials for the term 1967-68 was held. The new of ficers are: Kenneth Villlnes, president; Larry Bass, vice- president; Deborah Barnett, sec-, retary; Shirley Pettiford, assist ant secretary; Catherine Black- well, treasurer; Mary Russell, sergeant-at-arms; Thelma Ham- lette, chairman of advisory board and; Bernadine Royster, clerk of advisory board. Willo- ree Lawson was chosen Miss Person County High. - A new and more democratic method of election was institu-, ted by the Council this year. Congratulations are in order to the newly elected officers. With the officers elected the student body can look forward; to good government during the next school term. Student Council Representatives Attended Annual Conference On April 15th, five members Job Corps Director, New Mexico of the Student Council traveled i along with their sponsor to the Tenth Annual Piedmont District Conference of the North Caroli na Association of Student Coun cils at North Warren High School, Wise, North Carolina. Kenneth VilUnes and Jo Ann Harris, the official delegates were accompanied by Hattie Boyd, Gladys Lawson, and Wil liam Mials, unofficial delegates. The theme for this year’s con vention was “Challenges for To day and the Future.” Leader ship, Scholarship and Citizen ship were displayed throughout the convention in songs, by the main speaker and the panel. Not all the schools were able to have members on the listen ing panel, but Person County High School was fortunate enough to have Kenneth Villlnes among this select group. Mrs. S. J. Mials, the sponsor, compli mented Kenneth on his excellent performance. 'This particular group was selected to ask the members of the panel questions impromptu. The members of the panel discussed the topic: “How Can Youth Meet Today’s Challenges and Grow With Tomorrow’s Responsibilities?” Mr. S. E. Williams, Principal, Eaton Johnson School, Hender son, Mr. John Hawkins, Retired and Mrs. Jessie S.
