EIGHFH GRADE
'T NEWS
The Eighth “S” division of the
Roxboro Elementary School began
the school year with a determina
tion to make this year a very sue
cessful one.
We have discussed in our health
book many different topics. One
unit which was indeed interesting
to the class was entitled “Tobacco,
Alcohol and Narcotics.” In this
unit the pupils learned more about
tobacco, alcohol and narcotics and
their effects on the individual and
society. The major emphasis was
given to the fact that the pupil
must ultimately decide for him
self whether he is going to smoke
tobacco, drink alcohol, or use nar
cotics.
Points stressed on this unit were
these:
1. The smoking of tobacco raises
the blood pressure.
2. Tobacco tars irritate the lin
ing of the respiratory tract
and often make the smoker
susceptible to colds and other
infections.
3. The primary effect of alcohol
is on the brain.
4. The use of alcohol lowers one’s
resistance to disease.
5. The fact that all people who
drink alcohol are not alcohol
ics.
6. People who use narcotics are
maladjusted persons.
7. The use of narcotics results
in serious social problems re
lating to crime and unhappi
ness.
After studying this unit we feel
that each person has a better
knowledge about tobacco, alcohol
and narcotics and their undesir
able effects.
Our class is also placing special
emphasis on reading. All students
who read and report on twelve
books or more during the school
year will receive Reading Certifi
cates at the close of school.
We are hoping to have a largei
number of students eligible for
these certificates.
You wRl be hearing more from
us in the next issue of the
“Gazette.”

The class has gotten off to a nice
start for the year of 1961-62. They
were shown a film on Parliamen
tary Procedure after which the
following officers were elected:
President .... Thelma Hamlett
Vice President, Shirley Ragner
Secretary Joann Harris
Treasurer PhyUis Carver
Other members of the class were
elected to work on the following
committees: Social, Program, Lib
rary and Clean-Up.
The Clean-Up -Committee is really
paying off. If any paper or other
unnecessary trash is seen around
the pupils’ desks, they are charged
a penny. Sometimes one student
has to pay as much as five cents
(5c) a day. It is fuimy to see how
some students react, and it is also
helping the treasure.
The studies are a little tough
but are being mastered very weR.
The class is very interested in sci
ence because so many interesting
things are done. An I G Y Bulle
tin Board displaying pictures and
other information was planned by
the class. A Science Bulletin
Board showing the three layers of
air: troposphere, stratosphere, and
ionosphere has also been set up
