Page 4 THE GAZETTE Friday, .December 15, .1961; MEWS FROM SECOND Second Grade Brooks is happy to share some of the rich experi ences enjoyed during the first re port period. In studying language arts, the class met again old friends with whom they lived last year. These new stories about old friends were enjoyed by all. To help make the experiences more meaningful and interesting, pictures showing neighbors working, playing and having fun together were collected and displayed on the biiiletin board. Each class member was given a chance to teU about the good times he or she had experi enced with friends and neighbors. Some of the class wrote sentences, about their friends; some wrote letters to them; others drew pict ures showing some of the things they do together. In social studies, the class is en joying the study of “Community Helpers,” and is beginning to un derstand that it takes the help of many people to provide one’s, everyday needs. THIRD GRADE "S" NEWS Third Grade “S” is grateful to have Miss Smith as their teacher for the 1961-62 school year. With Miss Smith and the class pulling together, we know success wUl bes ours. During the second week of school the class elected officers. They are; President, Billy Abright; Vice) President, Michael Johnson; Sec retary, Phyllis Ramsey; Assistant Secretary, Roxie Ramsey; Treas urer, Gale Barnette; Reporter, Linda LawBon; Student Council Representatives are: Billy Al bright, Michael Johnson, Wayne Outlaw, Phyllis Ramsey. The class has gotten off to a fine start. Our theme for the year is, “Community Living Now and Long Ago.” We are now study ing about the Indians, and we are, making booklets to go along with our study. We hope to be with you in the next issue of the Gazette. Third Grade “S” Linda Lawson, Reporter Mary had a little watch. She swallowed it. It’s gone Now everywhere that Mary goes. Time marches on. Bolton ptarted the school year off with an enrollment of 40 pupils. We all were welcomed back to our workshop and assured we would have good times working and playing together this school year by our teacher. After a brief reviewing and planning period the majority of the class were ready to begin our year’s work centered around “Liv ing Together In Our Community.” We have completed four units of work, which are: “Old Friends,” “New Friends and Neighbors,” “Animal Friends,” and “New Storybook Friends.” Almost every child was eager to read or listen and find out more about his Old or New Friends, Animal Friends and New Storybook Friends. These units have helped enable the pupils to enjoy working and playing to gether, and sharing their adven tures more. The children shared farm children’s adventures with animals and pets, and gained new ideas to think about and stimulatel them to find out more about ani mal friends. We have learned several new songs and have seen several films' and filmstrips related to our unit of work. The chores of the class are tak en care of by a different mem ber each time in order to give each child the experience. The Student! Council is represented by two members of our class. Second Grade “B” Class THIRD GRADE "J" Hi, We are happy to greet you in, the first issue of our paper. In social studies we are study ing about workers who help us obtain water, food, shelter, cloth ing and fun. Our material is of wide interest to us and it is at the level of our experiences. We are looking forword to Thanksgiving. To us Thanksgiv ing means more than just a feast; day. We have so many things for which we should be thankful. Most! of all we are thankful for America,: our land. So long until our next issue. FOURTH GRADE "H" VISITS BRAZIL The Fourth Grade H, after q week of class orientation by our teacher had a wonderful insight of w'hat our school work for thq year would include. It was un animously decided by the class that Social Studies would be our major interest for study. The majority of us were interested in knowing how other boys and girls live in different parts of our coun try as well as children of othei; countries. We are now visiting iq Brazil, not only the children and how they learn and play but also 'the products of the country. We are learning a great deal from this study and finding it very interest- ling. Reporter: Carolyn Cousin Teacher; M. J. Harris GRADE "H" NEWS Hello, all you friends and neigh bors. How’s school this year? I bet you are really happy with your new teachers and new class rooms. Our teacher thinks we are the best; yet. We did a lot of reviewing; second grade work the first month of school. Since then we have worked on an Autumn imit of work. In this unit we are still working on the four seasons of the year, and how these seasons af fect us. At present we are study ing how fowl, animals, fish, rep tiles and other things migrate and hibernate in the fall of the year. We also enjoyed our Halloween work. Now we are enjoying work ing through National Education lii^eek. Many of our parents came to visit with us on Parents Day. They had dinner with us in thd cafeteria, and visited Our class rooms also. We are saying to our parents, “Please come back soon, we are always glad to have you.” Christmas will come around be fore we write for you again, so we wish for you merry and happy times on this day. FIFTH GRADE "V" NEWS The Fifth Grade of Roxboro Elementary School is glad to bd with you in the first issue of the Gazette. In Social Studies we have gotten off to a good start studying thei “United States.” To carry out our studies, we are taking an imagi nary trip to each section of our country. So far, we have gotten to the Southeastern States. Here, we talked about the land forms; traced the trip routes, visited the: capitals of each state, the largest' cities, national parks, and places of historical interests. Each stu dent was asked to make a list of .things he would take with him on our imaginary trip. ^ Early in the school year we elected officers. They are as fol lows; President, Cherie Hunt; Vice President, Harold Catefs; Secre tary, Beverly Baird; Assistant Secretary, Betsy Nelson; Treas urer, Reginald Tillman. Our class is well represented in the activities of the school. Stu dent Council members are Bev erly Baird and Cherie Hunt. Cor nelia Matthews, Alean Jordon, Drucilla Ramsey, Louise Scott and Bernice Wlalters are our Pride Patrols.
