Hillade P. T. A. Holds Final Meet The Hillside High Sdiool P. T. A. held its last monthly meet ing of this year May 2, at 7:30 p. m. New officers were elected at this meeting; the president of next year’s P. T. A. will be Sam uel Harris. VIEW MOVIE Mrs. Rosemary F. Funder- burg, Case Worker af the Fam ily Service organization of this city, pre^nted a film entitled “A Family Affair.” It was a drama of everyday family life, the story of the Cooper family, whose re lationships had been strained to the breaking point. Many fami lies like the Coopers live through the years in constant conflict and bitterness or end in separation or divorce. How this typical fam ily found a happier pathway was the moral of the film. The film, “A Family Affair” was produced by the Mental Health Film Board in Cooperation with the Family Service Association of America. A discussion period was held after the film had been shown. Shepiard Memorial Scholarship prizes. The lucky students will re ceive $200 in cash to be applied to tuition and fees at North Carolina College here. The scholarships were recent ly set up in 1948 shortly after the death of the late Dr. James E. Shepard, founder and first president of NCC. Hillside Becomes National Honor Society Sponsors 2nd Leadership Conference The Hillside Chapter of the National Honor Society sponsor ed the second annual Leadership Conference recently The purpose of the program was to stimulate interest in leadership and to im prove leadership abilities. The general theme for this year’s conference was “The Need For Trained. Leadership.” Speaking on the symposium were R. Kelly Bryant, Jr., J. S. Stewart, and Rev- J. W. Smith. Mr. Bryant spoke on “The Need for Trained Leadership in Char acter-Building Agencies,” while Rev. J. W. Smith, pastor of the Covenant Presbyterian Church, talked about “The Need for Trained Leadership in Religious Activities,” J. S. Stewart spoke of “The Need for Trained Lead ership in Civic Affairs.” Serving as co-ordinator for the discus sion was Dr. Rose Butler Browne. Rhoda Plummer, secretary for the Hillside Chapter of the Na tional Honor Society, gave the invocation, and Annie Spauld ing, president told the purpose of the confe;r„nce. Also participating on the pro gram was a quartet, composed of members of the National Honor Society. The group com posed of Patricia Spaulding, barbara Lvon, Ronald Schooler and Regizcaid Parls-er, sang “Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes.” The school song concluded the program. Principal H. M. Perry, pastor of the A.M.E. Zion Church will be the speaker at the vespers service on- Sunday, June 5, at 5:00 p.m. in the school audi torium. Music for the occasion will be furnished by the Hillside mixed chorus under the direc tion of Miss T. H. Claggett. Marvin Gooch Is New Student Council Proxy Marvin Gooch was elected president of the Hillside Student body in an election held at Hill side High on May 13. Gooch is an army veteran. Other officers elected at this time were secretary, Joan Grubbs; treasurer, Charles Mc Neil; parliamentarian, Helen Jamison. The vice-president had (Please turn to Page Eight) The annual College-Career Day of Hillside High School, un der the sponsorship of the Guid ance Committee and the Kappa Alpha Psi Fratenrity, was held at the school recently. Its pur pose was to aid prospective graduates and prospective sen iors in their selection of a col lege or a vocation. This year’s program which had the theme “Careers-Today and Tomorrow” began with an assembly for juniors and seniors where the feature address was made by Dr. Ray Thompson, counselor trainer of North Caro lina. Other speakers were D. H. Keck of Shaw University in Ra leigh and Mrs. Ellen S. Alston, Executive Secretary of the Wo men’s Baptist Convention of North Carolina. CONFERENCES HELD Special conference periods were held during the morning and afternoon where the fol lowing gave counsel in their res pective fields: Dillard Teer, en gineering and construction; Dr. H. A. Stroble of Duke Univer sity, science and research; Mrs. Louise McCrae of North Caro lina Mutual Life Insurance Com pany; Dr. Lincoln Harrison of North Carolina Colllege and J. W. Other counselors included Quill And Scroll Inducts Six New Members The William Alton Tuck chap ter of Quill and Scroll inducted six members into its ranks at 8:00 p. m. May 4 in the school library. Those initiated in to the society were Carole Ann Henderson, Alma Olive John son, Shirley Louise Stewart, John Lewis Brandon, Irwin Richard Holmes, Jr. and James William Herndon. Carolyn Martin, president for the Quill and Scroll, directed the installation ceremonies while Omelia Walker, vice-president; Barbara Lyon, treasurer; La- Frances Fisher, secretary; Annie Spaulding, and Ronald Schooler took parts in the installation. LAKIN READS POEMS Mrs. Mattie T. Lakin, journal ism instructor here at Hillside, read twelve original poems. Many of Mrs. Lakin’s poems have been printed and publish ed, and one has been set to mu sic. The one which has been set to music is entitled, “I Want To Go To Distant Lands.” She concluded her readings by playing a recording of this song. Mrs. Lakin also received mem bership into the society. PRINCIPAL HONORED Mr. H. M. Holmes, principal, received an honorary scroll from the society. Two seniors, Rebecca Suitt and James Suitt also participated on this program. James played “Ave Maria” as a trumpet solo while Rebecca served as his ac companist. Miriam Holmes and Amelia Thorpe played a duet. A social hour was held after the new members had been in stalled. Mrs. Edythe King, director of The Teenage Program pi the YWCA; Miss Helen Kaiser of Duke Hospital; Dr. J. N. Mills and Nelson Harris. The day ended with an evalu- tion period and an all school as sembly where a playlet, “The Door of Success” was presented. The entire program* was un der the direction of Mrs. J. 3 McLester, chairman of the Guid ance Committee and F. H. Al ston, dean of boys at Hillside. Home Economics Classes Honor Teachers With Annual Dinner The students of Mrs. M. S. Thompson, of the home eco nomics department held ai lunch eon recently for all homeroom teachers. Students Present Peace Panel Members of the Hillside Chap ter of the National Honor So ciety recently presented a fourth annual world peace symposiiun. The general theme for discussion this year was “The Role of the United Nations in The Building of World Peace.” Participating on the sympos ium were five seniors. These in cluded: Ronald Schooler, parlia mentarian of the Hillside Hon or Society Chapter, who spoke on the “United Nations Charter Review”; Annie Mae Spaulding, president for the Society, Bever ly Wright, Nellie Riley, and Bar bara Lyon also a ^enior member of the society served as mod erator for the discussion. WINNER CHOSEN Ronald Schooler was declared winner of the contest by the group of judges. Ronald receiv ed 294 points, while his runner up, Severely Anne Wright got -287 points. Annie Mae Spauld ing received 279 points and Nel lie R. Riley had a total of 276. Ronald being winner will re ceive the World Peace Gold Key on awards day. May 27 TEACHERS APE JUDGES Each speaker was judged on the basis of content, organi- ztion, and delivery. Judges for this occasion were Mrs. E. R. Herndon, Miss G. C. Lyles, and N. B. Turner. class and their parents. PRESENTS GUEST ARTIST Guest artist for this occasion was Dr. Loren Withers, director of piano at Duke University. Dr. Withers’ selections includ ed “Sonata in A major by Scar latti,” “Rondo in D major by Mozart,” “Nocturne in E minor Opus 7, Number 1 by Chopin,” and “Concerto in F minor by Liszt.” MEMBER SINGS Miss Juanetta Peggie Lyon, a ' graduate member of the Hill side Chapter of the National Honor Society, also participated on the program as soloist. In previous years. Miss Katie Lewis filled this capacity. Miss Lyon is now a senior at North Carolina College where she is a commerce major. SENIORS PARTICIPATE Eight members of Hillside’s senior class were also partici pants on the program. James Suitt, a member of 12-2 home room and assistant band con ductor of the advanced band, played “Ave Maria,” Opus 52, Number 6 by Franz Schubert as a trumpet solo. Mr. Gattis ac companied him. TO MARCH About two hundred seniors will receive diplomas at 8 p. m. June 6 when commencement takes place here at Hillside in the school auditorium. The diplomas will be awarded by H. Spurgeon Boyce, chairman of the school board, assisted by L. Stacy Weaver, Superintendent of the Durham City Schools. H. M. Holmes, principal of Hillside High School will announce the scholarship awards. The principal speaker for the occasion will be L. Stacy Weav er, superintendent of the Dur ham City Schools. The salutory and the valedictory will be giv en by Rhoda Plummer and An nie Spaulding respectively. Music for this occasion will be furnished by the Hillside choir and the Hillside band.
