CLOSER Snow Policy: When Asheville City Schools are closed because of snow, there will be no CLOSER program, but there will be someone present to rap. The anti-racism workshop, originally scheduled for February, will be postponed until later this spring. This workshop is extremely important to the health and growth of our community. It is intended to provide primarily white or Caucasian people with a forum to explore the underlying causes of racism in ourselves and in our society and to challenge racist beliefs and attitudes about people of color. Please take advantage of this opportunity to become more aware. Do the right thing. Speak Out is HRCF’s program to generate timely constituent mail to federal legislators prior to votes on issues of importance to the lesbian and gay community. In less than a year. Speak Out has become the most successful grassroots program in the history of the gay and lesbian rights movement. 'As the program has gi'own, we realize that much of the work involved can best be done at the local level, rather than from our Washington, DC headquarters," commented Tim McFeeley, HRCF’s Executive Director. "With Area Canvass Supervisors in regions throughout the country, we should be able to more thoroughly reach out to lesbians and gays who want to participate," he said. Supervisors will identify community events and other opportunities for enrolling participants in the Speak Out progi'am. In addition to canvassing themselves, the supervisors will recruit, train and supervise other canvassers at events. Those selected for the positions will set their own hours and have remuneration based on Speak Out enrollments, and will have responsibilities for a specific geographic area of the country. "Winning on life-and-death AIDS issues and on bills such as the Hate Crimes Statistics Act depends so much on the active involvement of lesbians and gays throughout the United States. Constituent pressure generated by the Speak Out program is an important way to participate," McFeeley noted. "With dependable, energetic individuals around the country joining our national canvass team, we can enhance our community’s voice on issues that affect our health and liberties," he said. For more information on how to become an HRCF Canvass Supervisor, contact Cathy Nelson, Eastern States Canvass Manager, at (202)628-4160, or write to the HRCF Canvass Unit, PO Box 1723, Washington, DC 20013.-Press Release C.L.O.S.E.R. NEWS CLOSER Adopts New Logo The winner of CLOSER’S logo contest was announced by the Executive Committee at closer’s January 23 meeting. The winning entry was submitted by CLOSER member John Yelton. John was presented with a framed certificate of appreciation of his contribution. About his entry, John wrote this explanation: "I tried to symbolize the idea of the community moving closer together, its various segments joining together in the process of uniting as a whole; and the shadow it casts being the complete, solid triangle. Maybe that’s part of CLOSER’s goal over the past decade-working toward the strength and harmony of a diverse but uniting gay community." The segments are pale pink shaded with purple, and the triangular shadow is dark pink. The logo will be used for letterhead in CLOSER stationary, and possibly for a CLOSER T-shirt. The logo contest was inspired by CLOSER’s tenth anniversary of serving the gay and lesbian
