The course is offered to women who are seriously interested in pursuing the craft and art of creative writing; all levels of writers are welcome. There will be in- class writing exercises and readings, discussions, critique, and a reading following the course. Some of the subjects we will discuss, through the use of writing exercises and readings of other women writers (including Virginia Woolf, Grace Paley, Sharon Olds, A.M. Holmes, Audre Lorde, Adrienne Rich and Jamaica Kincaid), will be the woman-structured sentence and story, seeing how woman’s language differs from man’s in image, structure and value; and talk about the need for women writers, as Virginia Woolf felt, to "write exactly as she wishes to write." We will also discuss the importance of sexuality and erotism in our writing, pursuing what it means, as women, to concern ourselves with the frank exploration of our bodies, our desire, and our sexuality. As a lesbian, I feel this is an especially important area of our lives not to be silent or half-honest about, and I feel that writing the politics of daily life for women, and especially lesbian women, is of prime importance for the transformation of our own lives, as well as for any deep, forward change in society. The course will be taught by Zoe Rhine, M.F.A. Creative Writing, on Tuesdays evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 at The World Gallery, 37 Biltmore Avenue, Asheville. The cost is $85.00. For reservations or more information, call 253-7325. ▼ It’s been an exciting summer.
