SERVING WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA’S LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDERED COMMUNITY
NC PRIDE MARCH JUNE 9-11TH
FESTIVAL, WORKSHOPS, DANCES AND PICNICS
Official March and Festival, Duke
University East Campus, Durham, 1 -5 p.m.
Multiple events and activities are sched
uled for North Carolina Pride 2000, a cel
ebration of gay, lesbian, bisexual and
transgender people, and allies, which
will take place in Durham Friday, June
9th - Sunday, June 10th. In addition to
dances, workshops and .other events
planned by specific organizations, the
official NC Pride 2000 March and
Festival will take place on Saturday, June
10th, on Duke's East Campus, from 1-5,
complete with local celebrities, games,
speakers, entertainers and a voter drive.
This year's event marks the 15th consec
utive year of Pride celebrations in North
Carolina (the first Pride event was held
in Durham in 1981, followed by the first
of the annual celebrations in 1985, also in
Durham). To mark this anniversary of
Pride celebrations in North Carolina, the
event will carry the theme "It's Time:
Come Out for Pride." This theme was
chosen to reflect the fact that despite
many social, political and economic
gains that have been made by individu
als and institutions in various LGBT,
communities throughout North
Carolina, much work still needs to be
done to gain full civil rights.
Accomplishments and victories will also
be celebrated by promoting unity and
visibility among lesbians, gay men,
bisexual and transgendered people, pro
moting a positive image through pro
grams and activities that foster an aware
ness of past struggles, and recognizing
the LGBT community as an important
and talented sector of this diverse state.
