December 20, 1972 - BESSEMER CITY RECORD - Page 7 City Receives Check War Mothers Dinner A Christmas Event For Revenue Sharing The City of Bessemer City has received a check for $25,371.00 for its part of the General Revenue Sharing Program. The check is for the retroactive period from January 1, 1972 through June 30, 1972. Mail Is Moving For Christmas Despite a heavy holiday mail volume, the Bessemer City post office will be generally clear of Christmas mail by Saturday, Dec. 23rd, Postmaster Glenn 0. Pasour said today. “I want to commend the 12 employees of the Bessemer City post office for an extraordinary job of processing and delivering the avalanche of Christmas mail with dispatch and ef ficiency,” Pasour said. He said the general public also helped to provide an ef ficient Christmas mail operation by mailing early in accordance with a series of recommended mailing dates which were announced earlier this year. The public cooperation has been especially helpful this year because postal employees will be off on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day so that they may enjoy the holiday weekend with their families. The post office will be closed on both days, Pasour added. NASA Cites BCHS Grad At Launching James R. Schofield, an em ployee of the McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Co., here, watched the launch of Apollo 17 as a special guest of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. After graduating from Bessemer City High School in 1955, he was graduated from North Carolina State College in 1959 and has been employed with McDonnell Douglas since that time. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James B. Schofield of 221 East Main Ave., Bessemer City, North Carolina. He is married to the former Janet McClunney, daughter of Mrs. R. A. McClunney of 12th St., Bessemer City, North Carolina. Mr. and Mrs. Schofield and their two children live at 2647 White Oak Drive, Titusville, Fla. Dr. Kurt Debus, director of the NASA-Kennedy Space Center in Florida, invited Schofield because of his noteworthy contributions in the Apollo program. The Kennedy Center is responsible for launching the Apollo 17 flight. A second check for the same amount will be received at a later date making the total amount for Bessemer City in the revenue-sharing program to total $50,742. At first the city had though it would receive the amount of $65,982 but after all reports were in, the city found out it would receive $15,240 less than the original figures. These Federal funds may be used for a variety of public purposes such as environmental protection, public tran sportation. safety, health, recreation, libraries and social services for the poor and aged. A nationwide survey shows that many municipalities and countries plan to use their revenue sharing funds for property tax relief in reducing property taxes. IN CHARLOTTE Mrs. M. B. Pearson and Mrs. L. C. Dobbins of this city and Mrs. Robert Travarthen and Miss Sarah Froneberger of Gastonia,attended the Sunday afternoon performance of the Singing Christmas Tree in Charlotte. HOME FROM NAVY Mike Black who is stationed aboard the USS Charles Berry with his home port in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, is spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Black. He is to report back to duty on January 5, 1973. "The most important thing we'll do today is fill your prescription!" Whitesides is chapter president. Mrs. A. L. Richardson had charge of decorating the tables Party For Mary Ann Mr. and Mrs. Glen Newton entertained Saturday afternoon at their home on West Indiana Avenue at a party that celebrated the eighth birthday anniversary of their daughter. Mary Ann Newton. Christmas decorations were used in the party rooms where Christmas games and contest were played. During the af ternoon. the young guests were thrilled with a visit from Santa Claus who talked to them and secured their Christmas lists for toys and gifts. Mary Ann’s white birthday cake was trimmed with red roses and held a doll dressed in ARE HOSPITALIZED Among local residents recently hospitalized at Kings Mountain Hospital have been Mrs. Ferrie F. Hager of Route 2, Mrs. Fred T. Logan of 502 North 12th Street, Robert L. Lineberry of Route 1. Mrs. Donald B. Frye of Route 1. Mrs. Charles W. Huffstickler of 312 East Indiana Ave., James Clyde Brown of 826 A Street and Mrs. Willie Faust of 906 West Carolina Ave. where covers were laid for a 12:30 covered dish dinner. She used greenery, red berries and candles. Mrs. Ross Nichols gave the invocation for the meal. Mrs. Whitesides welcomed Mrs. Douglas Phifer who had been confined to her home, with illness for an extended time. red. Also the words. "Happy Birthday. Plans were made for the chapter’s preparing four Christmas Cheer baskets to be distributed to needy families during the Christmas season. Also, the chapter made plans to send fruit basket gifts to members who are confined to their homes with illness. The chapter previously has sent fifty dollars to the Oteen VA Hospital and the same amount to the Salisbury VA hospital to use during the Christmas season. Plans were made for a White Elephant sale to take place at the January meeting on Thursday. January 4. 1973. Mrs. Whitesides and Mrs. Iva Parker are to be hostesses.
