Wednesday, December 12, 1D79-BESSEMER CITY RECORD-Page 5 interize Driving Habits As WeU As Cars Drivers should winterize their iving habits as well as their irs, the North Carolina In- rance News Service reminds otorists as winter approaches. Lt. Walter K. Chapman of the C. Highway Patrol told the 8ws Service, “Driving in nter is considerably different pm driving in summer, sibility is often reduced and ads are slippery. Good fensive driving demands pre care in starting, steering d stopping. ‘You can’t avoid a hazard you n’t see,” said Lt. Chapmann, o before backing out of the Iveway, make sure all win- ws and mirrors are com ¬ pletely free of ice. Headlights and taillights should be clean, too, so the other driver can see you at night.” Because sudden movement is dangerous under slippery conditions, Lt. Chapman ad vised making changes of direction slowly. Anticipate turns, slow down well ahead of them and then make them smoothly. If you hit an icy spot, he said, don’t panic. Ease up on the gas, hold the wheel steady and roll through. If the vehicle still goes into a skid, hitting the brakes will only make matters worse, warned Lt. Chapman. He advised. ^^^^^^^M*)w«)woMMa)iM}i^)Ka^ Holiday Recipes “Take your foot off the gas and turn the steering wheel slowly and gently in the direction of the skid.” Coarse rock salt, sand or a couple pieces of carpeting placed under the drive wheels may also come in handy when you’re stuck. Lt. Chapman pointed out that although mud and snow tires are acceptable for driving in snow and slush, tire chains are the best safety device for ice driving. He added, “While studded tires are legal in North Carolina, they don’t provide the same traction value as chains.” “In winter, vehicles can be dangerous even when they are not moving. People are killed every winter by carbon monoxide gas because they leave their engines running to keep their car heaters operating,” said Lt. Chapman. "If the engine is operating, a faulty exhaust system can be deadly whether the car is moving or standing still.” A safe car as well as safe driving habits will get motorists through the winter, Lt. Chap man said. He suggested that an automobile owner should have battery, brakes, tires, wind shield wipers, defroster and exhaust system carefully checked. “Make sure your car’s in winter-driving condition, then drive slowly and defensively,” he said, “that’s the best advice I can give.” SUPER HELPER—Lori Holland, a 8th grader at Central, waits afternoons after school at Primary School for her mother, Mrs. Ray HoUand of Primary staff.
