WATER AND AIR
IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMS
HERE ARE ANNOUNCED
NEW RECORD SET
A record-setting bowling score
was achieved by Roscoe Ponder and
Robert Williams in the recent Wes
tern North Carolina Ten Pin Bowling
tournament at Midway Lanes in
Clyde.
Their 1,371 pin total exceeded
any doubles score in the 34-year
history of this event.
Ponder and Williams bowled as
members of the "Invaders” in the
Olin Thursday Night league. Ponder

The major installations an
nounced in mid-April by Group
President Garza Baldwin, Jr., to
remove pollutants from water and
air emissions, will bring Olin's
pollution abatement spending
at Pisgah Forest to well over
$11,000,000.
Projected to cost approximately
$7,000,000, the projects include:
• Two large clarifier systems to
remove fiber and inert solids
from the industrial waste water
s A completely new sanitary
sewage treatment system de
signed to remove 90 per cent
of the pollution from the.
Company's domestic wastes,
already in operation
• Electrostatic precipitators de
signed to remove 99 per cent
of the particulate matter now
being emitted by the four newer
boilers
• Modification of the four older
boilers to reduce particulate
emissions.
The wide angle lens takes it all
in, where the precipitator installation
is discussed in the foreground of the
power plant by F. J. McGibboney,
left, director of production, Ecusta
Paper Division; and Lefty Hooks,
superintendent of the installation
for Research-Cottrell of Bound Brook,
N. J., manufacturer of the precipita
tors. The precipitators will virtually
eliminate fly ash emissions from the
four newer boilers. There are several
alternative ways of reducing emissions
from the four older boilers which
vent through the tall single stack.
A decision on the optimum alternative
is expected to be made sometime this
summer.
They are to be finished in stages,
and are slated for completion within
the next 18-month period.
In his announcement, Baldwin
said that the projects resulted from
extensive research and engineering
studies to find answers to the pol
lution problems caused by emis
sions from the Ecusta Paper
Division and Film Division plants.
"We are confident that these
projects will eliminate a substantial

NEW HANDBOOK
A new employee handbook came
off the press in April, intended
for use by all Fine Paper and Film
Group employees at this location.
In addition to being mailed to
homes of all employees, it will be
included in the orientation of new
employees, serving as a reminder
of what is said during the process
of adding persons to the payroll.
