MARKET DECLINE BRINGS FIRST
QUARTER LAYOFFS IN GROUP PLANTS
The national economy and the
energy crisis forced layoffs at the
Pisgah Forest and Covington plants
of the Fine Paper and Film Group
in the first quarter 1975.
The Ecusta Paper Division closed
down machines 10, 11 and 12 over
a five-day period early in February,
the result of both the economy and
the energy crisis. In addition to
helping the division adjust to the
reduced printing paper market, it
enabled the conversion of No. 8
boiler to fuel oil light-off, elimi
nating the need for natural gas to
start the firebed of coal.
Another short-term layoff in late
March, with shutdown of Ecusta’s
No. 12 paper machine and some
support activities, was due to both
the market and extensive repairs
to top water circulating tubes in
No. 8 boiler. The need for tube re
pair was confirmed during the
earlier boiler work.
Ecusta and both plants of the
Film Division were affected by the
layoff in early March. Although an
estimated 170 employees were to
have been affected, the total number
was reduced to approximately 100.
Many members of Local 1971 of the
United Paperworkers International
Union requested through their Union
that they be permitted to work re
duced work schedules in some de
partments. The Company agreed to
most of the requests, as result of
which there were fewer employees
than expected on layoff.
