26 CONGRATULATIONS FOR 2,000,000 SAFE HOURS CONGRATULATIONS FILM DIVISION EMPLOYEES FOR The two photographs above were taken shortly after each of the two plants at Pisgah Forest completed more than 2,000,000 work hours without a disabling injury, the first time since 1965 for the Film Division plant and 1968 for the Ecusta Paper Division plant. Combined, they repre sented more than 4,000,000 injury free work hours at the Pisgah Forest location, and by September 21 the total had passed the 5,000,000 mark. Company and Union officers shared in these photos the attain ment of the feat which Garza Baldwin, Jr., president of the Fine Paper and Film Group, called a noteworthy accomplishment that "has come as a result of hard work, coop eration, mutual trust, and involvement of all Pisgah Forest people." In front of the Ecusta safety board are, left to right, Fletcher Roberts, Group director of safety and loss prevention; V. Raymond Cooke, assistant manager of safety and loss pre vention; Robert H. Masengill, assistant director of production; Jerry Mann, safety supervisor; Jimmy Reese, Jr., chairman of the Company-Union safety committee; Larry H. Staples, vice president and gen eral manager; Frank J. McGibboney, di rector of production; Betty Harrison, Local 1971 representative on the safety com mittee; James R. Nicholson, manager of safety and loss prevention; and Dennis Norton, assistant safety supervisor. Dewey Sizemore, also a local 1971 representa tive, was absent when the photograph was taken. Those pictured before the Film safety board are Paul D. Seagle, presi dent of the United Paperworkers Local 1971; Thomas E. Payne, safety super visor; John D. Link, vice president and general manager; Nancy L. Logan, Local 1971 corresponding secretary; J. Donald Parker, plant manager; Jimmy Reese, Jr., representing the safety committee; and J. Robert Robinson, assistant to the plant manager. 5,000,000 HOURS (cont’d) gone 687 days and accumulated 2,422,890 injury-free worker hours. The Ecusta Paper Division plant, with the larger number of employees, recorded 2,578,737 man-hours in a 260-day period without a dis abling injury. John S. Candler, director of employee and community relations, served as master of ceremonies and introduced Group President Garza Baldwin, Jr., and other speakers: Arnold Brown, vice presi dent of United Paperworkers Inter national, and Ray Boyleston, di rector of OS HAfor the North Carolina Department of Labor. They re presented the triangle of safety responsibility: labor, management and government. Company and Union officers were hosts during the five-hour period of hospitality in the lobby of the Technical Building. Each employee was given a Safety Per formance Award, an embossed key chain, and a special plaque was presented Local 1971. PRESIDENT BALDWIN The complete text of President Baldwin’s speech follows: Several weeks ago, each op erating unit here at Pisgah Forest passed a major milestone in a most important phase of our busi ness - accident prevention. You, each of you, and everyone else working here made it pos sible for each of our two units to exceed two million worker hours without a disabling injury. That is more than four million injury- free hours for this location. This was accomplished because you brought safety awareness to the work place, and you made safety a way of your work life. For the purpose of recognizing and commending your vastly improved safety performance and attitude, we decided to put this special occasion together.
