Olin news ECUSTA PAPER AND FI LAI GROUP Vol. XXIII, No. 4 FOURTH QUARTER 1977 ECUSTA ENTERS INTO AGREEMENT WITH FRENCH MANUFACTURER PRESIDENTS SIGN - Henri Bernet Four decades ago a French paper mill was instrumental in establish ment of the Ecusta Paper plant along side the Davidson River in Transyl vania County. As of December 16, there again is a strong link between the two plants. An agreement was signed De cember 16 between Ecusta and Papeteries Bollore, S. A., by which Ecusta will provide technical assis tance to the mill at Troyes, France, and will have the exclusive right to distribute all of the tobacco industry papers manufactured at Troyes. John L. Olewine has been as signed the responsibility for pro viding manufacturing assistance to the Bollore plant. EMPLOYEE LOANS VALUABLE MEDIEVAL WEAPONRY TO MUSEUM GROUP YEAR IS IN TOP SAFETY FORM The Ecusta Paper and Film Group had a superior record of safety ac complishments in 1977, clear proof that there is an attitude toward safety throughout the Group that was not known four years ago, Fletcher Roberts reported in early January. Group director of safety and loss prevention, he said that there were reductions in every category of safety accountability. There was a 37 per cent reduction in first aid cases over the previous year, and in the severity rating this Group was No. 1 in Olin. There was a 33 per cent improve ment over the Safety Performance Index Goal. The OSHA goal of 2.0 was bettered by 20 per cent. A 50 per Perl Van Sant, solvent recovery oper ator at the Olin Works cellophane plant, began collecting armor when in his ’teens, and before World War II had amassed a splendid assortment of armor and weaponry from throug out the world. It is subject of a major exhibition opening early this year in the Asheville Art Museum, made pos sible through grants from the Olin Corporation Charitable Trust, the North Carolina Arts Council, and friends of the museum. Van Sant holds the Nuremburg armor believed to be of the period 1490-1510. The story of how he acquired the trea sures and many photographs are on inside pages. (Continued on page 21)
