Those who pray much, have no time complaining. What kind of i eligion is that now abroad: “I lovd God but not my brother.” An ignorant r ller with love is bet ter than a wise tyrant. Eternal Life i i the chief object of every (thoughtful) Christian. Ministers who are jealous of each others’ gift or ability unwisely work against each oth ;r. A consecrated professor, will have confidence in others. Without holiness we cannot inherit heaven. 'X , We have final cial days set apart, why not have a prater day in oar church once a y> sar foiva specific pur pose ? \ Honor is not neemly f< do,jnot understa id. brother or thosf who wro Stab of tho 2lst ait., I saw the pro gram of the Jabilee that is to be giy< en in honor of Dr. William J. Moore one of the worthiest characters in th« grand old North Carolina Conference. It is a cause thkt we feel willing and ready as a body to play our part in| beoause we know something of hia work and worth to Zion Connection ( and most especially to this Confer ence . ) • Dr. Moore has not only been a leading minister in Zion since '65, but a father to the Conference, and a friend indeed to her ministers. It is nothing more than right that we should do something in token of re spect to him who was there when the first Zion seed was planted in New bern, N. C., out of which has grown three conferences and two pieces, with a host of over 40,000 members. We raise more money for Zion and have sent out more representative men than any other State in the union. We claim our Price and Blackwell gs our fruits of which we are justly proud. So since we are called upon this time to honor home, we must prove ourselves equal to the task. While looking over the program I discovered that only one minister that has stayed at home and helped to make the North Carolina Con ference what it is to-day, was worthy of having anything to say in honor of home and other noble things, ,viz., Rev. H. Bell. Now, Mr. Editor, we are getting tired of such floifnder sided business. We are very often called upon to help buy the sugar but are left out in the division of the pie. We did think that if we were not able to do honor to Zion in New York at the Centennial, nor to Bish op Hood in Fayetteville; that surely we would not be too foolish to make a prayer in honor of Dr. Moore in Wilson. Where are such men as Rev. John Hooper, P. E., Rev. S. B. Hun ter, P. E , Rev. Wm. Sutton, A. M., P. E., Rev. W. A. Keys, Revs. S. B. Gaskill, F. B. House, C. H. Phillips, L. B. Williams, J. W. L. Council ? They are ministers that have been with Dr. Moore all their days, and they are no butterfly ministers hunt ing for the largest bush with the most flowers. No, they have stayed it home and have held what wa^ given them and aumented the work pearly. If I was Mr. Miles I would give them some place at the feast, such as coot-blacking or door-keepers; any way, some little place to let them rnow that I knew they were in the Connection. Brother Miles, have lot you some little insignificant place ;hat you can give these men ? I hate to see them left out altogether. And f you should need a sexton why not take Prof. Fonvielle? The way the thing is looking iftow, I am afraid the people will think it is “Dr." Miles’ lubilee instead of Dr. Moore’s. It ooks very much that way to me. Mr. Editor, we have had a gener jus-hearted set of ministers; but they have been ignored so much that .hey are becoming reluctant; and if they can’t be heard, I am afraid ere ong that they will be felt. Take ’or instance the Centennial money: ny district conference raised $50 in Grreenville (you were there, Mr. Edi tor,) $10 of that money I paid out of ny own pocket; many of the minis ters paid $5 each, but Rev. A. A Crooke, who was then pastor in Tar aoro, N. C., credited every cent of that money to himself and church. When Bishop Hood’s Jubilee was in Fayetteville we tried to do lur part, yet we received but very [ittle recognition. Now we are jailed on again, and I for one feel determined that the honorable minis ters of the old North Carolina Con ference shall have some recognition Dr I will jiot be in the fight. I do not want' one word to say myself, but thq pioneers of the Conference must be heard some time. Bishop Lomai id calling on the Connection ;o help in a worthy cause. Yes, sin Bishop, I will help and many others will help, but after we help, when ;be times' comes round for some one ;c go up and view the temple that we have built, please don’t forget ;bat we were there in the bursting of ,he stones from the quarry. Let the workers be honored sometime, and et Mr. Talker rest awhile. Cronley, N. C. All orders for books, etc., sent to the &.. M. E. If tho above is not sufficiently clear, I am wi :ling to 1 go into details and itemize from day to ■ day. Sometimes I say incidentals. For example: when I entered the harbor of Sierra Leone I had occasion to go from one ship to another, thence oa shore and return; when I asked the boatman for his charges, he demanded ten shill- ' ings: $3.50. From Monrovia to Brewersvillc, I was compelled to hire four men and a ham- , mock, to pay the men’s way up the St. Paul’s lfiver on the steamboit, feed them, and pay their hire until I returned to Monrovia. I A trip to Africa is not beneficial to i the traveler under any circumstances; . and nobody desires to go but one who j has an earnest desire to advance the in terests of Christ’s kingdom. I reported 47 members at Brewersville and 9 at Johnsonville with excellent 1 prospects; and some one thought a ’ thousand dollars paid to Rev. Cart- ' wright, and more than six hundred dol lars on my trip was too much money Bpcnt on fifty-six souls. The foundation for a publi j school * and society has been laid at Cape Coast, and negotiation is being carried on with ■ a church organization—of several ( churches—at Lagos for admisf ion into the Connection; and great er courage ment has been given to the memhers of ‘ the Church at Liberia on receiving a 1 visit from a bishop of the Coinection, Indeed a presiding elder of another I church told them that would bo the last , visit they would have from a bishop of the A. M. E. Zion Church—I am willing to give his name as I received it from members of the church. I pro raised the people that I would try to m ike them another visit two years hence, but I con fess I am not oyer-anxious to under take the job. I would like se me other bishop to have a chance and find out what it will cost to go and return. I have spent more than two hundred dol lars of my own money on this trip. I brought a young man—William Hockman—from Cape Coast, i;nd placed him in Livingstone College, and he is entirely chargeable to me: so far I have not asked the Connection for one cent. A church in British Honduias is urg ing me to go there and receive it into the Connection and I have thas report ed to the Board, but have not been great ly encouraged in the matter For the church and Connection’s sake I am will ing to divide my personal earnings with anyone who is willine to go. I go as duty and not as pleasure. Say if you want a more extended report—you shall have it. My mind is to obey authori ties. York, Pa. J. B. Small.
