If you as a true elator, Wish to know the robe she weirs— Go up in the elevator And come down the winding stairs. Mont(jornery, A lo. SPARTANBURG DISTRICT. BY REV. S. T. MEEK, P. E. I must congratulate you anti Manager Blackwell for the excel lent appearance of our Church or gan. Our 8-page Star now shines as it never shone before—the best colored denominational paper in the World-—a great credit to Edi tor and Manager as well as to our great Connection. I have just finished my second quarter and it seems that we have, with a little exception, a good set of preachers on the work. Wje may not say as much of them com mendatory as they expect, but we shall try to hold them up accord ing to the work they have done up to the present. Rev. J. M. Newton, p istor a+ Spartanbitrg station, is doing fair ' ly well. This is his second year at St. John and he will soon be ready to commence work < n a new church at that point. He is a good preacher and is much loved by his congregation. Rev. J. R. Blake pastors Steph en's Grove and New Prospect. These churches are doing well un der the leadership of him. Any church-will do well to have him as their pastor. We only wish that we had more Blakes to lay exam ples for those who are less mindful of their duty. Rev. A. J. Williams, ho ding the fort at Dorah’s and Snoddy’s Chap els, is moving things before him. He is a good preacher and his peo pie speak highly of him. His \ work eclipses that of any of his predecessors at these points, j Rev. J. E. Goings is at the helm j at Rice's and Jacob's Chapels. He is an all-round Christian gentle man and is working his people up j in grand style. He has a bright future before him. Rev. Spencer Young has charge pf Little Field and Burnt Factory ; and is pushing things. He is building a church at Little Field, which when completed vyi 11 bo a handsome edifice. Rev. H. Adams at Elzie and Noble Chapels is doing well, hav ing added several to his churches this year. We think we will soon igo into Greenville with Zion and [plant her to grow and lift her proud head and say, “I have found I a dwelling place." Rev. H. W. Smith is serving his first year at Clinton Chapel. Union station. He has had a good revi val in his church. We might style him as the “Lion from the j West.'’ This Smith walks away and his people seem to be with him. ! We think he would make a good f evangelist. Rev. J. Brown holds the fort at Beaty’s Chapel and Good Hope. This is his first year at these points, but he has added many to his churches. They call him the “Lion of the mountain.’’ When he is; out. things get quiet. Rev. Jas. W. Eichelherger pas tors New Hope and Canaan. He is doing well and is making strenu ous efforts to get that fine church at New Hope ready for the “big meeting." Rev. R. B. Williams, pastor of Williams’ Chapel and St. Luke, is ! a very successful and energetic ; preacher. He has built up his j congregation at both churches and is doing a great world remodeling them. If we had a few more Wil liams it would be difficult to tell how fast the churches on the dis trict would grow. Rev. L. C. Chamblin, of Mat j thew circuit, is one of our best ! pastors. He lias hiyh appreciation for the Church of God. Within the past seven months he has done I more for the people than some have done in years pa stormy. He ; has his people at heart and builds , them up along1 all lines. He has , built a thousand-dollar church at ; Matthews and R prepariny to build j a tine church at Mabenton. has : purchased and put a tine bell on ; Whitmire mission, and added about | 40 souls to the church, 32 of whom j were converted under his adminis tration this year. Do you call ; that eominy or about to come? ' Rev. A. McNeil of Cedar Grove and Spring- Hill is doiny well. TTG j churches are a little off financiallv, but they are eominy and will yet i there just the same. He is a yood ; shepherd and watches well over | his flock. Rev. Bullock at Sims Chapel is ! hrinyiny thinys to the front. It I is a small church, but he is a wil i liny worker and doesn’t mind j small thinys. x Now, dear pastors of the Spar tanbury district, we want you to prove your manhood arid briny up all the Connectional claims to the Conference. We must far exceed the other two districts this year. The Steward tells us that some of you have not yet reported to him. Brethren, you must keep the law of the Church. You who wear the shoes know best where they pinch. Remember the Palmetto school; we are building and out district is to raise £500, and brethren, we can not afford to fall short of it. Some of the churches have not reported j anything yet and even, some of the pastors have not paid their dues. : Lay aside selfishness for a while, j pay your own dues, aiyl get out of the way of the members.
