We have no apology to make and simply promise to do all in our power to make this column as interesting as the editorial columns by giving you the latest and best news of the city and vicinity. Hoping you will give us your encourage ment and best wishes as we start our reportorial career, we shall endeavor to face the music. Miss Willie Massey is at Hun tersville. Miss Georgia Walden is expected home this week. Mr. J. E. Walker spent Satur day in Huntersville. Mr. James A. Pethel, of Howj ard University, is in the city. Rev. G. C. Clement, who has had typhoid fever, is improving. Mrs. Robt. Johnson of S. My ers St., is very sick at this writing. The graded schools open the first Monday in September—two weeks hence. Miss Etha Coles is in the city the guest of her brother, Mr. J. S. Coles. Dr. G. L. Blackwell filled the pulpit for Rev. Clement Sunday evening. Mrs. A. W. Blackwell has re turned from the Summer Institute at Greensboro. Miss Emma Haskins and Mr. Willie Johnson are spending this week in Wilmington. We are pleased to note that Miss Susie J. Freeman, who has been very ill, is much better. Capt. J. E. Hamlin and berg’t Maj. Zack Alexander left for Ft. Macon Monday morning. Mr. R. S. Alexander, of Gas tonia, was in the city this week and gave us a pleasant call. The Humorist Concert to be given at St. Michael’s school-house August 25th is to be rare treat. Mrs. Martha Fuller left Monday for New York. For the last six months she has been visiting her mother and brother here. Dr. G. L. Blackwell and Dr. A. J. Warner left here to attend the Bishops’ Meeting at Asbury Park, N. J. Rev. D. C. Covington attended the Lincoln district conference at Kings Mountain last week, where he delivered the opening address. The camp-meeting attracted im mense crowds yesterday. Some one came in and reported that there were 17,000 Negroes out there. There were hardly that many, but the whole face of the earth was covered with them.
