r VICTORY OVER SPAIN. BY REV. S. S. WALES, P. E. The war is over, Spain no more With cruel hands obstru< sts our shores; For centuries with bloody hand, She Iruled in triumph o’or the land. If the numbers she has slain, Could all arise and live tgain, The world would all in wonder stand, To view the work of barbarous hands. Nj record can be found when Spain Has added credit to her name. By deeds of Christian bro :herhood, Approved by all the wise and good. To recognize a power Supreme, Is what that nation never dreamed; She sought her glory to n aintain, And thus to spread abroad her fame. She never learned that nstions must Be subject to the Lord’s, behest; He is the God whose mighty hand Rules and triumphs o’er the land. If nation’s would but leara this well, And then from generations tell How God down through the ages came And has indelibly wrote His name. Buried cities, speak in words That tell the wonderful works of God; Demolished thrones and empires, too, Along the track of time E e strew. [to be continued.] Harrisburg, Pa. CHURCHES AND CLERGY. SUCCINCT REPORTS INDICATIVE OF THE PROGRESS OF ZION, Much good is being done here for God. My revival opened last Sunday; nine persons were con verted. Pray for us.—Rev. A. Mclver, Newton, N. 0. —o— My revival has closed with great success—19 souls happily convert ed, and other prodigal sons and daughters are returni ag to Christ and the church.—Bev. Wm. C. Pierson, Cooksville, Miss. —o— Chestnut Grove church has a loyal people that say they will do all they can to pay the Connec tions! claims. We have raised $11. $0 for Children’s Day and $4.70 for Easter. The popular H. A. Kelsey went from this church. i —D. D. Moore, Smit h’s Turnout, s. c. __ 1. [ Our quarter has closed success fully here. Bishop Harris, who is the right man in the right place, preached two soul- stirring ser mons long to be remembered. Our noted presiding elder, Wm. Lyons, who knows no failure, preached a Holy Ghost sermon at 3 p. m. I am doing what I can for success. —Rev. G. W. Washington, Stone ga, Va. I pitched my first battle at Evans chapel, on the second Sunday in August and fought 1;he devil and his crew for about two weeks. General Jesus heads the army and routed the devil and captured 52 of his soldiers, and 44 joined my two churches. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.”—Rev. P. J. Jones, Pittsboro, N. C. —o— Rev. T. H. Hall, our pastor, knows no failure. With eleven members he has nised for all purposes about $200. Each male taxed himself $20, a id each f enjale $10. Some have paid up, and others are coming to the front. Rev. Hall holds good congrega tions and preaches logical sermons. 1 am in favor of presiding elders holding office two years, then pass out and let others take take their plaees. Dr. J. W. S iiith, get your robe ready and prepare for a seat among the bishops.—Willie Pierce, Rocky Mount, N. C The corner stone laying and dedication of the church will take place at Morven, N. C., Friday night October 14th. A literary entertainment will be given—10 cents at the door. On Saturday at 11 a. m., Dr. G. L. Blackwell will preach the cornerstone sermon. At 3 p. m., Bishop J. W. Hood, assisted by Dr. Blackwell and Rev. W. J. Gaines, will lay the corner stone. At 3 p. m., the Bishop will dedicate the church. We want to raise $100. We do not say much, but Zion is not asleep here. She is leading and will continue to do so while we have good preach ers. Our pastor, Rev. A. J. Mc Donald, has done a great work. He is one of the leading ministers of Zion.—R. D. Ross, C. F. Fet terson, Jackon Miller, committee. —o— We are moving as never before. Bishop Holliday has visited nearly every point in Presiding Elder R. J. Sims’ district and has put new life in the work. Presiding Elder McElwee, Revs. Marshall, M. Mitcham, A. M. White and I. R. Ham bright are hustling ministers. The ministers of our district will make the ministers of the other districts in the North Arkansas Conference open their eyes in the next conference which meets in Little Rock, Ark., December 14th. In fact, it is now believed that ac cording to membership this dis trict will lead any district in the North or South Arkansas Confer ences. It might be well for the brethren to clip this and see if it comes true. Our hardworking presiding elder has several compe tent young men to offer for work in Zion at our next conference.— Rev. T. S. Mitcham,! Overcup, Ark. V. C. E. TALKS. RESUME OF OUR SOUTHERN CAM PAIGN. BY REV. J. B. COLBERT. We regard our recent trip through a large portion of the South in the interest of the V. C. E. as one of great interest to us and profit we trust to the large number of V. C. E’s~ which we had the pleasure of personally vis iting. The pastors, as a rule, did not hesitate to say to us that per sonally they themselves were greatly benefitted by the informa tion they received as to the V. C. E. movement. Many acknowledged that they had not given the work much at tention nor had they shown very much interest in it simply because they did not understand it. One pastor alleged as a reason for his not taking very much interest in it was because he (the pastor) did not know that it was' one of the departments of the Church, and operated under the auspices of our Church. He said he thought it was some “white man’s affair,” hence did not feel safe in taking much stock in it. This and many other similar excuses were given us at many of the points which we visited. We are glad to say that after we spoke and explained the work to the people they were per fectly delighted and expressed themselves as being willing to take hold of the movement and operate it in the Church and for the Church as never before. We preached nine sermons, ad dressed 29 Varick C. E’s, con ducted 17 consecration services, or ganized three Varick C. E. socie ties, and resurrected some that had fallen, asleep—in negligence. It was our pleasure to meet many of the brethren of whom we had heard much. Many thanks are due and are hereby extended to the pastors and their wives, friends and all for the courtesies and acts of kindness shown us. We shall always point to this campaign with pride and shall ever regard it as one of the most event ful periods in the history of our life. Now that our face is turned to the future with a buoyant spirit and a much encouraged heart we begin the Fall and Winter cam paign for God and Zion. We say adieu to our Southern campaign and a benediction of love to all who gave us cheering words and fervent prayers. Washington, D. C. The watermelon and apple dumpling social given by the trustees of the A. M. E. Zion church was a success socially and financially. ■ There was a large number present and all enjoyed the pleasures of the evening.— Calif or r.i Outlook.
