A Great Discussion on the
Minority and Majority
of the Episcopal Committee
On Reports.
The questions were: we shall
elect one bishop and no more,
Majority Report.
We shall elect two or more
bishops. Minority Report.
Bishop Walters obtained the
floor and spoke on the majority
side. He showed that from a fi
nancial standpoint we are not albe
to bear more than 9 bishops..
He reviewed the entire field
ten minutes. Dr. W. H. Cham
bers secured the floor and made
a strong" speech showing that
faith in God would solve the fi
nancial problems. The minority
cheered for 10 minutes.
Bishop Small obtained the floor
and by reference to Livingstone
College, showed that the connec
tion only needs to fill Bishop Hol
liday’s place. 10 minutes.
Rev. E. J. Carter obtained the
floor, and referred to making

j borders of Zion. 10 minutes.
The floor accorded to Dr. J, E.

D. Mason, who spoke for the ma
jority. He made a strong plea
for the financial department.

Rev. L. S. Corrothers rose on
the minority side and made a
speech for more bishops. 10 min.
Rev. E. D. W. Jones, A. M., se
cured the floor and in his very
witheringly sarcastic way made
a powerful speech.
The Rev. Dr. A. J. Warner of
the minority side arose and made
an unwonted onslought op the
Board of Bishops, and' general
i omcers, as to tneir reacmng me
delegation. He made a strong
speech which elicted cheers from
the minority side.
Bishop G. W. Clinton was accor
ded the floor. “Together let us
sweetly live” was led by Bishop
Harris, then Bishop G. W. Clin
ton secured the floor and warned
the Conference of unto word in
fluences brought to bear by Dr.
Warner. Dr. W, D. Clinton se
cured the floor and spoke for the
Laity as a majority for 2 Bishops.
Several Laymen arose.to refute
it.
Rev. J. C. Temple, D. D. se
cused the floor and spoke on the
minority. Several points of order
were called on the gentleman in
j his reference to the financial plan.
Prof. S. G. Atkins made a
strong speech pn majority side.
‘ The Rev.. Dr. Goler secured the
floor and made a ringing speech
for only one Bishop.
Rev. J. W. Holland secured the
floor, and after making a refer
ence to remarks by Elder Jones
•secret made a speech for two or
more Bishops. After a motion to
extend the time, and to give Bish
ops Hood and Petty 10 minutes in
discussion. Bishop Hood se
cured the floor and read some
facts about finance and the folly
of about increase receipts on in
crease of Bishops.
Rev. G. W. Lewis of minority
said his annual Conference had
instructed him to vote for two
or more Bishops.
Rev. T. B. McCain secured the
floor, and spoke on the majority.
Rev. B. J- Bolding secured the
floor made a minority speech.
Prof. W. Me B. Provinder made
a good speech on majority side.
Bishop C. C. Petty made a
speech on the minority side.
Bishop Lomax arose and pre*
faced his motion with some re
marks of the people of the South
West, and moved the previous
question.

Through your paper I wish to
call the attention of our race as
far as possible to the fact that the
: Census Bureau is planning to
| make a special effort during the
taking of the Census in June to
find out the exact amount of prop
erty of every description that is
owned by the Negro race.
This means agreat deal to us as
a people and we will be largely
judged by the world by the result.
It is of the utmost importance
that each individual member of
the race in every part of the coun
try begin at once to make a care
ful list of the amount and value of
the property that he owns so as
