JOHN AM) GIBSON. Dear Brother Massey: The St. John and Gibson people have been doing things so nicely since Confer once I feel impelled to write of their doings again. With some few pxreDtions we have a most loyal nponle They are standing by their suspect he would have, with a part nnstor this vear as never before. On 0f that dinner, as Brothers Smith r " , mi r and Shaver aid. ine comerence in the afternoon was good and well at tended. All that was done that day was i hoii, voor a hminv ' nev uesau work this year by placing on the parsonage lot a supply of wood which has not yet all been used. Other provisions we found in the parsonage, a sufficient amount to last several days. Our first Quarterly Conference was held at Brooksdale Church, Feb ruary 23. The presiding elder, Brother Wooten, was present and preached an excellent sermon at IX o'clock, which was both strong and impressive, and found response in the hearts of the people. The dinner served at the noon hour made us wonder that if Mr. Hoover should im n round, would he interfere. Pleasant 7 Nashville 8 the stewards of their own accord raised the pastor's salary twenty five per cent over last year. And their collections for the first quar ter were fine. The St. John's stew ards who have reported say that every one approached has willingly raised his assessment 25 per cent fo meet the increase. I am sure the others and those at Gibson will find the same ready response. A few Sundays ago I preached on the war and urged my people to go the next day and buy War Savings Stamps. Those selling told me that that Monday was the best sales day they had had, their sales being some thing like double any previous day. On yesterday I preached on the "Minister" and took a collection for the purchase of the Advocate stock, and the upkeep of the district par sonage, and secured $66.00. For nearly a year our St. John's Sunday-school has been giving its first Sunday collection to the Or phanage and for the past three months the total has beenabout $20. Our Gibson school started the same yesterday and its collection was $9.11. The first Quarterly Conference for Rowland Circuit embraced Sat urday and Sunday, the second and third of March, and was held at Rowland Church. Rev. J. II. Hall, our presidng elder, was delayed in as clean Churches to preach in as getting here on account of a late can be found anywhere. And our train, but held our Conference Sat urday afterncjon. The reports were the best that have been made at first Quarterly Conference during my three years here. On Sunday Brother Hall preached two good helpful sermons at Row land in the morning and at Cente nary in the afternoon, administering tho sacrament of the Lord's supper at both plaees. On Saturday at ten o'alock the stewards of the charge met and or ganized by electing Dr. Geo. M Pate, chairman, and Brother Ber nard A. Edens, secretary and treas urer. Without a dissenting voice they voted to increase the pastor's salary 20 per cent, making it $1 200 Our board of stewards took a forward step i deciding to have quarterly meetings apart from the XnH J ?nferences r consulta tion and discussion. Our people congregations are splendid in size and in attention. W. H. BROWN. BROOKSDALE. Dear Brother Massey: When we were read out for Brooksdale Ct. at the Annual Conference, at Green ville, we did not only not know where Brooksdale was, but did not remember any such a circuit within the bounds of the North Carolina Conference, After a little inquiry we soon learned that it was one of the twins just born from the old Mt Tirzah Circuit. We have not been sorry for one minute that we were sent to this charge, for surely we are in one of the very best counties in the State! Jn?aK T mre l0yal pePle are not to be found anywhere. They ar always ready to do something to how their appreciation, and to make the preacher and his family were made secretly, for we received one of the heaviest poundings that night that we have received since wo have been in the ministry. Flour, meal, sugar, canned goods of all kinds, eggs, and almost every needed grocery. We wish to thank these good people for all these valu able things and pray God's richest blessings uploin them that they may be all the more happy. We are looking for the best year in our ex perience; we expect to make it so. As we have not been accustomed to writing very much, we will close by sending three new subscriptions to the Advocate; will send others in a few days. J. A. RUSSELL. TAR RIVER CIRCUIT. The First Quarterly Conference oi Tar River Circuit for the current year was held at Kittrell March 2 and 3. A fair representation of the official members was present. Rev. J. E. Underwood, P. E., was present, and rendered effective service in the pulpit and as presiding official. Sun day morning services were held at Plank Chapel.
