Eighteen Licensed at Durham Me- Kanna Treatment Interesting Suit (Special Star Correspondence.) Durham, N. C, Oct 28. Eighteen nurses passed the State board for li cense to practice their profession, the semi-annual examination being held here this .week with Dr. Oscar, jrMc Mullen; of EllzabeCify, directing tne questions, rne numDer oi apptv cants were, unusually large. The young women made a splendid show ing, and all passed successfully. The examinations wero held in the class room of the Watts Hospital. Wll mington appears to have had the larg est representation, .five of the appli cants being from that city.' The highest average in the class was made by Miss Hezel Deen Ham lin, of Wilmington, who was closely followed by Miss Reid i Blalock. of Winston-Salem. There was a differ ence of just one-tenth of one per cent between the two. A suit has been instituted against the Virginia-Carolina Chemical Com pany for damages to health and prop erty. The prosecuting lawyers are ex-Judge J. C. Biggs, of the Trinity law faculty, and Lawrenco Tomlinson, Ksq., and the suit, is being brought by John Hayes and Sarah Evansworth colored. In the plaintiff's statement of damages, it will be charged that tho whole community within a radius of a half mile within the reach of the company's plant at East Durham, has been hurt by the deposit, the gases dun mines comine from the manufac ture of fertilizer, and that the odor is imaging to the health Of that com munity. These cases are only a be ginning, for it is said that there are now a dozen or more suits of a like nature in court or headed that way. ir. J. J.
