After opening lower in response to disappointing Liv erpool cables, the cotton' market ral: fied during today's - trading on, bull 'support, and covering, which; was pro bably inspired chiefly by predictions 0f unfavorable , weather over Sunday, The eXose was very steady at a net advance of 1 to 6 points. At any rate, he niarket soon steadied and later in tne morning sold, about 3 to .7 points nft higher on support from the same strons interests who were aggressive on Thursday and Friday and covering for over the week-end. The close was within a point or two of tho Vest' ac tive months: The forecast for snow and cold in the West no doubt ac counted for much of J,he covering, as scattering shorts showed little dispo sition to carry through commitments over Sunday on a probable bad wea ther report, and in view of talk of con tinued Southern holding. Some were inclined to regard the relative weak ness of Liverpool, which-has recently shown leading strength, as reflecting a less favorable view of the situation in tho China trade, but ft Is said that while China merchants .have attempt ed in cancel orders for goods In the domestic market, the mills have re fused to permit such action on the ground that the port of Shanghai is open, and that there Is'no -reason why the shipments should not , be made. Comparatively little news was circu lated from Southern spot centres dur ing the morning and probably the fail ure of yesterday s 'late report or an easier tendency to receive confirma tion of a character suggesting a gen eral loosening tip of holders helped to steady the futures market during the morning in connection with the, pros pect of more unfavorable weather for tinning and tne movement.
