Blackburn, a - well I nown tobacco: man of .this , city, had an experience such as seldom falls to the lot of a man whose life is usually of even tenor. He met his father for the first time in 37 years. When Blackburn's mother died he was four years of age. The father, his home thus broken up, put the little son in charge of a grandmother, who liv ed in Danville, Va.,,. and went West. tTntil a year or two ago he was in Los Angeles, teaching' for, 34 years in suc cession in the schools. Upon his re turn to the East he located in Mt. Airy. N. C, and it was agreed that .at the first opportunity the son whom he had not seen . in nearly two-score; years should visit hfm. A few days ago the Kinston man went to Mt. Airy; and gladdened the paternal heart by a stay of two days. The elder Black burn was delighted, and very probably kenned with approval, the son of 41 whom he had last .taked to his bosom vhen four and curly headed. Filial interest ran rampant, and the - father promised to come to Kinston. for a visit in the early Spring. The long absent parent is Capt. T.G. Blackburn, 71 years of age, a veteran of the Con federate army. In 'a regiment of Vir ginia foot soldiers he saw service in North Carolina" 'during! Several members responded with short, snap py addresses that kept the fun goiig from start to finish. It was one of the most pleasant affairs, indeed, in the history of the ; local camp, which has a long and distinguished career in the fraternal order world of Wilmington. The feature of the evening was an oyster eating contest by three of the members, these being Messrs. George Harriss, W. A. McGowan and A. Matthews. The contest was called off owing to the fact that, v the oysters gave out before this 'trio was half through..: Mr. Matthews still holds the medal as he won ;the contest last year. Sergeant Woody' Howell, of the po lice . department, declined to enter the contest and Mr. Walter E. Yopp was unable to attend. The following toast was given by one of the members: "I am a Woodman, but I chop ho tree, But I eat these oysters when they are free: I attend no meetings of the Wood men's camp, But I eat ,their oysters till I get the cramp. Now in my heart, I'm a Woodman still So I eat their oysters till I get my fill. So please don't Stop me, for goodness sake, I - ; - Until I get the stomach ache! I know of others j who can oysters eat, They are Alex, Dock and "Billy" Fleet; And then there're others who wish they could, -Store them away! like Jno. E. Wood.
