Although there were symptoms of weakness iu various quarters t the outset 'today the. general movement wns tipward. f Reading, especially, was in activ demand. The market, failed, how ever, vto: maintain its strength and during the latter part of -the day. it slipped back ward until prices in some Instances ' were belowy ester day's close. Reductions In the Bank of England's discount rate from 5 to 44 per cent, exerted an important influ- '1enoe ori a itirae, assisting in the; upturn. The effect of the change in tne discount rate was ' Increased by, the strong showing of the bank's -weelily statement, disclosln.g an increase in the proportion of reserve liabilities from 33.3' to 49.43 per cent. There was evidence of improving conditioUs in the. domestic money market, also. Call loans were -renewed at 2 per cent., and lowerrates .were quoted for time loans and mercantile discounts. - The" afternoon recession in stacks was Influenced by several developments. " The monthly -Copper statistics showed an in crease of stocks of 43,350,000 pounds, a much larger falling off in consumption than had been expected. .Domestic deliveries were the smallest of any month of the five years .Llnf which the Producers' Association has been Issuing reports. Copper stocks, which had held up well In the. forenoon, sold offsharply on - the: appearance of the report. . . ' : '. ' - . .Another disturbing feature was the acute weakness of American sugar, ; which sold off over four ! points. New Haven also de clined abruptly, owing to the poor show ing of the road s November statement. Bonds- were Irregular, . with- an -upward, trend. :r Total sales, par value, $2,7oO,000.
