At the summit Ahe May option brought $1.43, a price not equalled before in years. The chief reason was that exporters wanted more wheat than they could buy in American markets. . The tone of to day's stock market ranged from ir regular to firm, with a total output of moderate proportions, Representa tive shares rose and fell alternately, the only notable exceptions being Baltimore and. Ohio common and pre ferred and New York Central, which rose from 1 to 2 points. Coppers, American 'Smelting and a few less active specialties such , as American Tobacco and United States Rubber, advanced a point or more on small dealings and' motor stocks were in evidence at higher prices. Declines again embraced the Soo issues, as well a Colorado Fuel and International Harvester Corporation, preferred. The only real activity of the session oc curred in the final hour, at which time the directors of the Baltimore and Ohio road were deliberating on the cot ton dividend. Fears of a drastic cut caused a sudden slump in that stock as well -- as the balance of the speculative list. When just before the close it became known that the semi- j annual dividend had been reduced only one-half of one per cent, to 2 1-2 per cent., the entire market recov ered. Realising for profits caused some recessions at the end, but the close was steady. . Other news of the day included a new high price for May wheat, with an unusually urgent export demand and the completion of the financing attend ing the St. Paul bond .issue and the new Russian loan. Monetary condi tions showed a preponderance of cash over demand with resultant greater ease in three and four months' loans. Call money again went to its lowest rate of several months and mercantile paper of the highest class was ac cepted by financial institutions at rates more advantageous to borrowers. While con siderable selling pressure wae put on the cotton market today, prices held their own fairly well and the close was ::t net loss of only 4 to 5 points. Ax the lowest of the' day prices were to 7 points down. Exports were small, only 1,645 bales from all United States ports and somewhat less inquiry as reported for spots but there was not enough selling at any time to bring about a pronounced break. The census report on consumption was a stimulating influence since the billing off during December in this country was put at less than 6,000 hales, compared with the same month in 1911. Bulls also called attention to the figures, showing stocks of cotton ft mills to be almost 400,000 bales smaller than they were a year ago. Spot cotton quiet. C, Jan. 14. Pender county superior court will convene next Monday with Judge H. W. Whed bee presiding. The case against Mrs. Hand, charged with killing her brother, George P. Jordan, last year will "probably be tried at this term and will probably consume more time than any other case on docket. With the record Judge Whedbee has made in other eounties in dispatching business, it is expected that, he will do a good deal of work here, and help to clear the docket. The regular monthly meeting of the teachers of Pender count' was held here Saturday, with a very full at tendance. The next and last meeting for this year will be held in February. What came near being a fatal ac cident befell young - John Brothers Wednesday, when he was struck by the sweep of a timber wagon in the woods. Dr. A. J.
