COTTON BUSINESS WAS QUIET Rallies Followed a Sharp Early De cline Scattering: Local and South ern Liquidation. New York, July 2. Rather a sharp early decline in the cotton market was followed by rallies with the close steady net unchanged to six points low er. Business became very quiet dur ing the afternoon.' - The opening was easy at a decline of six to nine points in response to the easier ruling or Liverpool and houses v, ith English connections with con siderable sellers during the early trad ing. There was also quite a good bal ance of scattering local and Southern liquidation. Active months sold 10 to 11 points under last night's closintr fig ures before the end of the first hour. After the close abroad offerings be came much smaller here and .prices rallied on covering for over holidays. Active months sold a point or two net higher on this demand but the ad vance was checked by realising and fluctuations in the later trading were somewhat irregular. NEW ORLEANS COTTON Close Was at a Net Lom After and an Unsettled Session. New Orleans,. July 2. The cotton market was easy today around . the opening and the close, but was steady at the middle of the session and for a while stood at the level of yester day's close. - The close .was at a net loss of 4 to 6xpoints.- ' Scattered shbet selling was in evi dence nearly all day and was Tmsed on poor cables and lack of export7 busi ness. Weather conditions were not as unfavorable as they have been.. Trading was restricted by the triple holidays in the American markets, fol lowing the close tonight. 1 ; Futures closed: July 9.06; October 3.49; December 9.69; January- 9.79; March 9.98. ;- ,' Spot cotton, quiet and unchanged; middling 9.00. Sales ou the spot 150 bales, to arrivo 300. - . : WEEKLY COTTON REVIEW Government Crop Report Featured Week Some Doubt of Final Show 1T of Estimated Decrease ' New York, July 2. The feature of the week in the cotton market was the publicatioh of the Government's crop report onVThursday, estimating the acreage planted at 31,536,000 acres or a decrease of 15.7-per cent, as com pared with last year, and the condi tion at 80.3 per cent, compared with 80 per cent, the previous month and 79 the ten year average. Trading has continued quiet and fluctuations today were irregular. Gov ernment statisticians so far this season have published no interpretation of the condition flindings in terms of probable yeilds and there appears to be quite a general feeling ih local circles " that such calculations are greatly complicated by uncertainty as to the effect of the reduced use of fer tilizers."' Moreover, there appears to be some doubt as to whether final figures on the average will show as big a decrease as the preliminary indication and ideas as to the crop suggested by the con dition report have ranged all the way from under 13,000,000 to something over 14,000,000 bales. Reports from the drygoods trade in dicate continued activity among do mestic mills, while Liverpool spot sales have been large enough to attract considerable attention. MARINE. Arrived. Str. PRICE OF STOCKS CONFUSING Erratic Course Was PursuedStandard Issues Varied in ..Price Trad ing Generally Was Dull New York, July 2. Stocks pursued an erratic course today, price changes being more than ordinarily confusing. Some standard issues were up while others were lower, the same condition applying to numorous specialties. Trad ing was dull except during the first and final hours, when the weakness of United States Rubber and St. Jaul created general unsettlement. Initial sales of rubber were at 45 to 46 against yesterday's close of 51 1-8. From this level the stock declined to 44 1T4, mak ing moderate recovery later. Canadian Pacific fell to 142, and St. Paul fell to 83 3-4 on rumors affect ing the maintenance of its dividend. Steel's strength was ascribed to the optimistic statements of trade authori ties which found partial confirmation in further price international bonds, presumably for foreign interest was a feature. Total bond sales, par value $2,810,000. United States bonds un changed. 1 New York Stock LUt. NEW ORLEANS WEEKLY COTTOst Small Advance Over Last Week Boll Weevil Reports Cause Steadiness New Orleans, July 2. Cotton mafie a small advance this week, reacting from last week's decline, the close hav ing been at a net gain of 1 to 6 points. The early part of the week was devoted to evening-up in prepara tion for the bureau reports on Thurs day but while these reports caused much speculation before, hand and were regarded as important, prices barely were affected. Business was held down, to a great extent 'by the triple holiday, which begins Saturday. Much of the steadiness of the week was due to boll weevil reports from Texas and reports of excessive mois ture in Arkansas and Oklahoma. Much attention is being paid the ex port situation and cotton interests throughout the south are endeavoring to bring pressure upon England and her Allies to reduce some of the re structions now hampering cottqn ship ments in order to clear the way for the business of the new season.
